I rode my motorcycle today. It was over 90deg. when I stopped for gas along side one of those "donor-cycles". The roughly 18yr old had on shorts, tank top and sneakers. He did have a helmet, since it's Nebraska and he had to. I was in tall leather boots, riding pants and jacket with armor, leather gloves and my full face helmet. I looked over at him and just shook my head. It sure is going to hurt when he falls.

From what I understand, road rash at 20km/h is painful, but curable. Road rash at 80km/h usually results in severe personal injury, with some permanent damage likely, but the patient will usually live, if they get to a hospital quickly enough. Road rash at 120km/h or more is usually fatal, even if your final landing spot is through the front door of emergency at the hospital. Yeah, that layer of dead cow hide can be hot and bothersome, but would you rather replace the dead cow hide, or your own.

like anything else, they make perforated leathers, and if you keep moving and keep properly hydrated it isn't terrible. I have ridden full gear in 100+ degree days before. the end all be all is that its just not fashionable.

aka,

it's cool to be stupid

They also make jackets and stuff out of other materials that use some kind of armour, for the same purpose, I know, my Brother-in-law has one..... Plus, motorcycles have that old fashioned air-conditioner, the wind.

I was one of those who wore a helmet probably 50% of the time. I usually left it behind when the weather was warm. I've never had a close call, but watching a trauma-survival story on TV was enough to get me to wear it all the time now:

A teen was skateboarding down a mild hill while his friend video taped him. The rear wheels slipped a bit, and his reaction and regaining traction threw him backwards off the board. He hit butt, then shoulders, then coconut. All at a relatively slow speed.

At the 6 month point, it was looking like he may be able to regain a large percentage of his speech and mobility.

I wear my hair short and have a 6-head, so I usually wear a cap anyways to keep from burning to a crisp. The helmet isn't any more expensive than a nice fitting ball cap, and is actually cooler. No brainer to me.

Not with the crowd I hang out in! We think it's cool to be ATGATT. That stands for All The Gear All The Time.

I will now take my own advice and wear my damn bicycle helmet all the time too. I am going to have to get a new one though, the one I have just isn't vented enough!!!

Well I had a little scare myself yesterday. I was getting out of the shower and, well, suddenly was on the floor, smacked my head against my scale. Even though I just fell, and hit this little weenie scale, I have one heck of a knot on my forehead. I don't want to imagine what ti would have been like had I been on a bicycle and going at some speed.

So I'm off the bike today (also smashed my toe in the process, ouch!) but you can be certain after that I won't ride AT ALL without a helmet.

I was at the LBS looking at bikes this past weekend and was taking one out for a test ride, sans helmet. One of the guys at the shop saw me 'heading out' and cracked "you want to spend the rest of your life sipping your meals through a straw, eh?"

I took the loaner helmet he then offered
