First race, bonk, puke and near collapse

Just poking in quickly before I go lay down. Finished my first race, a annual local 75km arranged by the cycling club in town. My time came out at 2:23 wich surprised me a bit. All was going fine until i had to push hard outside the group for a while because I couldn't find a gap, then I just faded as they went up a hill and fell back. My pulse was off the chart and my breathing got choppy and I wnt slower and slower until I had to stop, and up came the sports drink. this was about 57km into the race. After standing around for a couple of minutes I felt it was safe to go on, and finished the race at 25-26km/h.

Exhausted, sore and extremely happy all at once now.

Here's me about to cross the line:

Wow, congrats on your first race! Sorry to hear you couldn't keep the sports drink down. That happens a lot more in races than most people think. Kudos for still finishing.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

5'7", 210lb. Lost a lot over a few years but still have a flabby gut :-(

I've been thinking a bit and concluded that I would probably have done a bit better if I had eaten a bit more and a bit later, my last meal before the race was about 2 hours earlier and consisted of a bowl of wholegrain cereal and a slied banana. Also the glucose based sports drink didn't fit me very well but it was all the shop had. I've been using another, maltodextrose based drink all summer without that reaction. Of course, the first 57km went at speeds way above my training, I think we did it in 1:40 or something whack like that.
