Hey folks, First century ride

Yep, I finished it! *high five*
Clydes, we own the descents! :)

Feeling pretty good afterwards, although my butt and feet are sore. I guess that means proper shorts and shoes are in order.

Any recommendations for shorts or liners and shoes?

100 miles without bike shorts?

Good job on the ride!!!!!!

After buying cheap bike shorts, I won't do it again. I have Pearl Izumi. They may cost twice as much or more, but they are built better and have better pads by at least that much. The stitching and everything is a lot better than the first cheapy pair I bought on line.

Shoes, I have no idea, as I can't find anything that will fit my size 12 feet that are not all that wide, but the road bike shoes are made with someone with half the width of my feet.

I did the cheap bike shorts thing a couple times too. Learned my lesson and I also buy PI shorts. Since I've only got a couple pair, the extra $ isn't so bad.

Good lord, you must love pain......a century without a chamois? Are you secretly Tinker Juarez? (He rode RAAM last year using unpadded shorts!).

frogpound 08-21-07 09:08 AM

the short I wore were cheap REI mountain biking shorts and the padding didn't cover my sit bones. Most of the padding was in the ballular area and more a discomfort than anything. It was the first time that lycra sounded like a good idea.

Its also a new bike so my butt hasn't broken in yet either... :)

Thanks yall! and lol@ Scummer

Way to go with the century! You rode that thing in regular shorts? GOOD GOD! I'm reminded of a theme song from a 1970s Mel Brooks film: "He rode a blazing saddle....":D

Seriously, anytime that I ride over an hour or so, I ride with standard road shorts. You get over the "look like a dork" factor really quickly after you wear them ONCE on a long ride. The brand and type of short is personal preference. I like almost any non-gel short with a little bit of extra padding. The cushy-part of the padding is not as important to me. The most important aspects of the padding are the enhanced skin dryness (poly-fibers don't absorb moisture and whick it away from you), and how the pad makes it so that nothing rubs between you and the saddle (your seat stays in one place with no rubbing shorts). Brands of shorts that I like include any middle or upper-end shorts (I buy the low-middle shorts, but get upper-level ones as gifts sometimes) that are non-gel from Performance (Century shorts or better), Pearl Izumi (Attack or better), Cannondale (have more big-sizes and sometimes less revealing), and Castelli. I've had some horrible off-brand short experiences...well...maybe not as bad as you just experienced on your century.

As for pedals, there are lots of choices. I ride SPD clipless these days, but have thought about trying the speedplay x-series pedals. In any event, lots of road riders around here like lighter mountain bike SPDs, road speedplays, and road Crank Brothers egg-beater clones because they are double-sided, and you can clip into them without looking down at all. You can only clip into one side of all other types of road pedals (look, road-SPD, cage-clips), which makes using them problematic for many to get used to at first. I used to ride Looks, and lots of people that like a large platform perfer them, as do many triathletes because they make look-traithlete shoes that stay clipped into the bike all the time where you slip your bare feet into the shoes and go.

Try on lots of pairs of shoes, and get some that fit your feet the best. There is nothing worse than a bad-fitting set of road shoes on a long ride. They should not be too loose, or pinch or bind anywhere right out of the box.

Congradulations again, and have fun out there!

Way to go! I really am floored by all of those who have gotten out there and really pushed themselves!!

 CONGRATS

i have only 1 pair of shorts and,i wore them for the first time this weekend.but i wore them under some bermuda shorts.they still helped a lot.
i tried my clipless pedals and, shoes this weekend also.but just on quick around the block rides and,i didnt care for them.
so i took them back off and,put them atom pedals and,the brooks toe clips back on.
i guess im just a creature of habit.:D

brodie 08-21-07 02:55 PM

i meant to give you big props for that great achievement. a 100 mile ride will have to wait until next year for me.but im working for it.100 miles is a big big accomplishment. cheers to you.

frogpound 08-21-07 03:24 PM

Thanks y'all
I've been riding w/ SPDs and some older specialized shoes... not the best, but not too bad either. my feet didn't really start hurting until 85 miles in so that wasn't too bad I suppose.
I didn't care for clipless either, but now I love it... the only reason I haven't put the shimano pedals on my fixie is cuz I don't want to have to carry a 2nd pair of shoes to work....
I think I'm going to the LBS today to get some shorts... thanks for the tips!
