A different kind of shorts question
Do the pads on shorts wear out, I mean up until now, they have been working nicely, but the last couple of longer rides, I have been getting some butt pain. So I am wondering do I need to replace the shorts, or do a saddle upgrade?

Specifics...which shorts, how old, what bike and saddle and how long are your rides?
But the short answer is yes, they wear out.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Sudden onset of unusual pain usually indicates an angle change in the saddle or worn out Chamois. Try the shorts first, since you can't have too0 many pairs of shorts.

Will check the angle on the saddle, how long should a Chamois last, 500km, 1500km, 3000km, further, shorter???? I just find that for shorter rides, there is no problem, but as I try to get more distance, on the longer rides, I have an issue. This is why, I am wondering about the saddle, it's a factory MTB saddle, so maybe I have exceeded it's ability to provide enough support. Maybe I need to ask Santa to bring me a Brooks this year

A few weeks ago I posted this, and I have finally come to realize the problem it's chafing, and as rides get longer, the problem is getting worse. Will a different saddle help, I know there are various creams and stuff that will help, can someone recommend a couple of different ones, that would be available here in a large city, in Canada.

you know I had the same thought a couple of days ago. I started having pain when riding my road bike and I just replaced my seat post about 2 weeks ago. No issues on my hybrid, so this makes a lot of sense.
