Damn, I'm 77.8 mph behind. I thought I was doing good. I guess I need to wait for winter, maybe the snow will help, not.

I bet his friends are still gonna give him a hard time about the rubberized speed suit, though.

"I broke the world speed record on a bicycle by 14 mph!"

"Yeah, we know. We saw you on the news. Awesome job, man.... That suit looked excellent. *snicker*"
"You totally need to wear that out to the bar tonight. That thing just screams 'chick magnet'"
"Hahahaha!"

Not an absolute record, though. John Howard went 152 behind a car at Bonneville about 1985.

Cool, seems to be this is a sport, another video of another rider, turn the sound off, the Japanise guy gets a little annoying, a little slower, but watch his front wheel, that had to hurt! (stupid quick release).

It's hard to tell on the "gone wrong" video, but looks to me like the bike frame just disintegrates.

I'd rather fall on the snow than the ash, I believe.

It looks like one of three things happens:

1) The front wheel came off, and when the fork hit the ground it was ripped off.
2) The fork broke at the crown, causing the frame to collapse.
3) The head tube broke off.

Reviewing the video again it appears that the fork blade is still attached to the escaping wheel. So I would say either the fork blade broke off the crown, or the steerer broke off at the crown, the forces on a bicycle at speeds over 100MPH (160km/h) would be such that any tiny crack or fault in any of the joints would cause a failure. As for falling on ash or snow, if the snow is fairly fresh, and it's been cold for a while, I would take the snow, snow that has partly thawed, then refrozen and been compacted by previous attempts could be like concrete, where someone fired buckshot into it before it cured.

I read about the one with the crash months ago, the head tube broke off the frame.

The funny thing about the one on the snow is that the guy brought everything with him for the record attempt except the special shoes he was supposed to wear. He was wearing a pair of Vans skate shoes when he did that.
