The skinny on butter?
So what is the deal with butter? I keep reading the phrase "chamois butter" and from what I gather it's for cutting down on chafing. Any basics I should know? Application? etc.

Inexpensive alternatives include Udder Butter (You can get t at Walmart), or Bag Balm (Also Walmart or Walgreens). These are originally used in the dairy industry to prevent mastitis in a cows udder from a milking machine. They also make good hand creams for diabetics. Another is a diabetics hand cream caleed, quite appropriately, Crack Cream
It's to help a diabetic ith cracks in the skkn on the finf=gers and toes heal up.One warning, Assos Chamois Cream has menthol in it

It just looked funny. I read it as "mastities." I realized that wasn't what you had written and that I had misread. Thought it was amusing in a childish and immature way.

From what I've read, chamois butter was intended more for old leather chamois. I don't use any with the synthetic chamois of today.

I use Queen Helene and BagBalm. Both work good enough. Bagbalm is a bit messy IMO. I use good shorts so 20 milers are no problem. 40-100 is where I appreciate the lube job!
Good size container at Walmart for near $5. I checked out chamois butter at the LBS, $16**********I don't think so!

There are lots of lubricant products on the market. Although the original creams were used with old style chamois, many of the new creams are formulated to use on skin and synthetic chamois. I don't use one much anymore, especially since I found the perfect saddle, but on long rides or week long rides, I will use some just to keep things smooth and unchafed. My favorite product is Assos Creme. It's pricey but something about the way it goes on, feels while riding and then washes off and out I like.
Basically today's "butter" is something to keep you comfortable and unchafed. If that's a problem for you I would suggest trying one of the products on the market.
For application - you can either apply it to the chamois, apply it to yourself or apply it to both. I personally apply it to myself where needed.

Sorry for my ignorance... what is a chamois? I thought that was a piece of split and softened leather. I use them to dry my car after washing it. They are soft, don't scratch the paint, and hold a lot of water.

It's the padding in Cycling shorts. It used to be made out of Chamois and still is in extremely high quality cycling shorts. It's mostly been replaced with synthetics in the middle or lower end market
