Clipless - Crank Brothers Egg Beaters

This is for my road bike, but I am thinking about these, as they are supposed to allow more float than the SPD's, and they supposed to be great for easy in and still have the benefits of being clipless. I am also probably going to go with a MTB shoe, because they are a little wider and that is something I will need. I have not been into every LBS, but none of them had shoes that I could fit into. I may spend some time trying on shoes at the Omaha TREK store and see if they treat me any better this time. Probably not, but at least I wouldn't feel guilty not buying anything from them.

For those of you who are running clipless and special shoes, what do you use? I wear 12 or 13 shoes, and have gone from wides to somewhat normal after my 100 pounds of lost weight. I am thinking 47 for shoes, because I will be wearing socks.

I use Crank Brothers Quattros on my road bike and Candys on my Cyclocross bikes. I use mallets on my Miyata ATB. I feel more comfortable with a platform of some sort beneath my feet.

I like the MTB shoes because they make walking much easier when I am off the bike. Using the same system of pedal on all my bikes makes clipping in and out second nature from bike to bike. I have a a size 14EE shoe size and wear a Shimano size 50. Finding something in your size should not be outrageously difficult.

When you go for shoes get your foot measured and do so in the afterrnoon after you have been walking around all day.

I went to a fit expert recently and he suggested I stick with SPD (instead of egg beaters) because SPD had more float.

That being said, I had already ordered a set of Crank Bros. Mallet C pedals. I think once I'm set up and ready to go again, I may ignore him and stick with the mallets. Or....if I do switch, I'm considering Time ATAC cleats (Time Z or similar pedal).

I went thru this EXACT thing today.

I have been using Crankbrothers Eggbeaters (standard MXRs) and an Adidas road shoe since I got my bike in June. I got the $100 shoe for less than $50 off of Nashbar's returned items page.

I wear a US 13 in every US sized shoe I own.

My Adidas road shoes are a 48 and a tad too tight, but I've just dealt with it as bet I could.
I tried on a Pearl Izumi mountain shoe today, and the 48 was so big I could fit my thumb behind my heel in the shoe. The 47 fit perfectly.

Also to add to the story, I own a pair of Hugo Boss casual shoes. They are size 46.

You sound like a 46-48... be sure to try them until you know how certain brands fit you (before ever ordering online).

I agree that mountain shoes are best, but because it's a hell of a lot easier to walk in them I discovered today. I thought it was exaggerated on the internet - it's not - go with mountain unless you're racing.

I've only used CB Eggbeaters for clipless - so I can't comment on how they compare to anything - other than I love em.

p.s. Buy shoes that have SPD compatibility (most will) - so the CrankBrother cleats will bolt right up.

Have you tried SPDs yet?

They're great in that you can get the low end pedals practically free- the LBS has piles in the take-off bin.

I've had a couple of knee and ankle issues that I'd think would make me sensitive to float, but once I get the cleat set right, the SPDs are fine.

You can buy any of the shoes that are used for spd pedals and substitute the crank brothers cleats. You can buy anything from the street shoe types to more expensive MTB shoes. Switched to crank brothers pedals candys for the mtb and cross bike and quattros for my road bike. The quattros have a cleat arrangement that will fit the sidi road shoe with the 3 screw arrangement very well. Nice thing about the crank brother pedals is they can be fully rebuilt. Happy I switched.

I am going to try and find some places to try on shoes this week. Then decide on what I want to do.

OK, The shoes that fit my feet best were Shimano SH-RO85 size 47 (12.5 U.S.).

Since I don't know anything about them, I asked the sales guy at the bike store (not local to me). He said I would need to use the SPD RD540 and up clips with these shoes. These shoes are three hole.

Is there any place on the web that has these shoes cheaper than what I have found, or is there a similar shoe available at a cheaper price? I don't have $200.00 to put into shoes and pedals at this time, and I really don't want to wait until Christmas to put them on the list for the family.

I have found them everywhere for $100.00, but since the bike store had them at the same price, I figured there had to be a better deal somewhere on the net. No big deal. I called my LBS and left a message with the owner, I will see what he comes up with for shoes/pedals.
