Looks like I picked the wrong day ....

to start sniffing glue. That has to be the only thing I can think of that made me get on the bike tonight and go riding when I knew it was Florida - Georgia weekend. I got run off the road 3 times tonight . Good thing I was on my hybrid. Bike, wheels and body all made it home in good shape, just a little dirty, but just damn, I tore a hole in my bibs when I went into the bushes. It was just unbelievable the amount of morons on the road tonight and I was in a business park area that was pretty empty. Last three days have been rain and cooler weather and I did not feel like riding the trainer. Should have.

Dang.....glad you weren't hurt!

I've had those kind of rides myself though. It's a relief when you get home undamaged ;)

Just a few scratches on my hip, torn bibs and gloves, but other than that, no real damage. Remember kids, don't do drugs and then go riding on Florida - Georgia game night, they don't mix.:D

Dude!

Were they intentional?
Drunks?
I would abstain from riding on Friday and Saturday nights.

I assume every driver is a drunken idiot. Just last week I met up with a car at a stop light, the driver opened his door and puked his guts out.

KingTermite 10-28-07 05:19 AM

With all the drunk college kids and rednecks on the road, you're lucky it wasn't worse. You called it yourself, "what were you thinking?"

At least it wasn't Florida/Florida State. THAT would have been nutz!

Yup, I avoid it on Saturday nights at all costs. Also a lot of people who don't normally drive those routes to go out or whatnot so they're not as familiar with the roads.

I live in small town (6000) Iowa, and get tired of riding around town, so I went on the highway for a 2 hour ride yesterday. I never had a problem with a driver of a vehicle from either direction. I was on a highway that has a shoulder that is very wide for bike riders to use without any problems. We are in the middle of harvest, so the semi trucks hauling corn or beans were everywhere. They would actually swing wide into the other lane if it was clear for them to do so. I was impressed.

If I ever move to a large town, I think I will have to find out about the bike trails in the area and make that somewhat of a priority. I am not much on night riding, because we have a lot of gravel/sand on the shoulders of the highways and in town at most corners. I try to ride when it is light out.

What do you use for lighting when riding at night? On your bike, or on your body, or both********** Just curious.

I assume all drivers are GUILTY of being morons. That way I'm not suprised. Yesterday my club and I were riding in a nice hilly area with several curves. Some redneck came around the corner in our lane with his tires squeeling. If we had been 100 feet up the road further and riding three across, he would have nailed one us.

I am glad you are ok....

jaxgtr 10-28-07 07:22 AM

I never had issues in this area on nights ride before as it's a business park that only had one exit, but they put in a new access road and I guess they might have been using it to get to the interstate. I never ride anywhere near the main roads on a Friday\Saturday night, that would be suicide. I do believe one was intentional and I can only believe all three were drunk as they all seem to think the bike lane was a car lane. Good thing I had a mirror on my bike, or I would have been a statistic. I was so nervous I did not go to bed until 3:30 am.

ScrubJ 10-28-07 07:32 PM

Must have been one of those kinds of weekends. Did the Sunday morning group ride today, half of the 40 miles in the rain. While crossing the Wabasso causeway some idiot in a whit Ford pickup thought it cute to buzz us with the horn blaring and cutting off the front two riders. All in the rain!!!! Nothing like a little excitement while crossing a bridge.

I don't know, when they call the game (Georgia-Florida) "The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party", it's pretty tought to beat for craziness. Jaxgtr, of all the nights of the year, you picked that one? Mark that on your calendar for next year, glad you're OK.

Sandwarrior 10-28-07 08:37 PM

WOW.... I am glad you made it home in one piece.

I think you have to be from Florida to fully appreciate what I was saying.

Fl/Fl State are HUGE rivals. Everytime they play, half the state watches, gets drunk, etc... I'm sure anywhere in the area where they play is going to be packed full of drunk red necks and college kids like you could not imagine.

Very true, I will not ride that night at all except on the trainer with a beer in my bottle cage. :D

I was stationed at Moody AFB in Valdosta, GA for 6 years. Even that far from Jax was a nightmare for the GA-FL game. The traffic coming through on I-75 and people staying there due to cheaper rooms was astounding. Up here, the Kansas-Missouri game is huge but it's not like that!

It means the penalties for drunk driving are no where near tough enough. Then again, ever see a bar that didn't have a huge parking lot? Now honestly, I have not had an alcoholic beverage since 1993, and frankly I can't see why people must get drunk in order to have a good time..... I go out with friends and family all the time, and have a great time, without booze, so why can't others?

Around here the police have an annual program called RIDE, they will block a street, and check every vehicle, you pull up, the officer sticks his face in your window, and asks if you have been drinking, if you answer no, and the officer believes that answer to be correct, they give you a coupon book, for deals on car stuff, and other things, and send you on your way. If the officer believes your answer is incorrect, or you admit you have been drinking you blow into a machine, if you get a green light, then you can proceed with a warning. You get a yellow light, you must find an alternative way home, your licence is suspended for 12 hours. Of course if another person in the car is licenced, and gets a green light, they can take over driving. If you get a red light, then you are taken to a police station for an official test, and will be charged if your over the legal limit.

You know, they have had this program for over 10 years, and they still lay 100's of charges every year, because the penalties are too soft, still..... Maybe FL needs a ride program the weekend of the big game, and start taking away some licences longer term.

I have long thought the penalty for drunk driving, should be a 5 year driving ban, then they delete your licence at the end of the ban, so you need to go through the process of obtaining a licence all over again. Driving during such a ban, sober, gets you a fine, equivalent to your annual income. Driving drunk during such a ban, means you get to serve the rest of your ban in the county lockup, at the end of which, you get another ban the same length. Tough, you bet, see, driving drunk is a voluntary offence, if you want to go out drinking, either arrange for alternative transportation, or arrange for a place to stay. The law could allow rural bars to set up a sobering room, this is a room with a bunch of cots, where customers could go to sleep it off. In urban areas there are usually other alternatives, like calling a cab, taking transit, getting a room nearby.

KingTermite 10-30-07 01:03 PM

FL has never been tough enough on that and many other laws, IMO.

They law are pretty tough, but not tough enough to convince people not to drink and drive. I think the drinking to have fun thing goes away with age. I might have a beer every 6 months or so, but not something in my diet for a really long time.
