Bianchi Axis?

I've been in the market for a new bike. I've been riding my 18 yo Schwinn 5-speed for the last several months and have lost some weight but have a good bit to go. Ultimately, my goal is to keep riding, lose the rest of the weight and eventually join some club rides and do a century.

I don't have a lot of money to spend so I've look at everything from the Trek 1.2, Cannondale CAAD9 (too much $$$ but a lot of bang for the buck) to bikesdirect. I found a 2005 Bianchi Axis on craigslist that I may be able to get for about $450.

Does this sound like it would fit my needs? Does anyone have any experience with this bike? Will there be a serious speed difference between this and a true road bike?

Thanks!

I have an 06 axis and I like it a lot. I bought it to use as a road bike, I wanted a more relaxed geometry, fatter tires, and more powerful brakes that a typical road bike. In addition to lots of room for bigger tires it is set up for racks and fenders if you want to do some light touring. And finally its got MTB gearing which is great here in CO trying to peddle my fat butt up and down the hills.

That's not a bad price at all. If it fits, go for it. It won't last long.

Thanks for asking. I should have updated you all. Well, as I was walking out the door to go see it, I realized I had a message on my phone...she backed out. I ended up going over to the LBS, test riding some bikes again and walked out with a Cannondale CAAD9...I actually went on a rant about it over on the Road forum!
