I would take you up on that, because I have been to Florida when you are cold, and I was wearing shorts and t-shirts and walking outdoors all day, when everyone else was in pants, long sleeves, and jackets. But, I also will work outside in the Iowa heat with high humidity everyday also as it doesn't seem to bother me much. I just drink more fluids and go on. The cold is bothering me this year, and I am an outdoors person all year round and have been for most of my life. I was just eating like I was two people and not just one, so I had a lot of fat on my body.

The ice has left us as it got hot yesterday (44) , but we have wind chills in the single digits today with snow forecasted for tomorrow. I will get the hat out and see if that helps me much.

I'm thinking that because I'm having a really tough time with the cold this year and am at my highest weight ever (which is also why I've taken up cycling ). Back when I was 155 pounds and solid muscle, I also worked in a frozen food warehouse and routinely ran through the 0 degree freezer with no jacket as long as I was moving. Over the years I've gradually become less and less energetic, and have also gone up to 250. Now I find myself looking for a jacket when temps drop below 60 out. I attribute this to my higher weight, worse physical conditioning and the fact that I spent a lot more time outside during our unbelievably hot summer last year.

For me, it really wasn't in what I was used to. I moved from Maine to Texas and during the same time lost 65 lbs. I moved in the fall of the year and hadn't had a chance to acclimatise to Texas summers, and I was much more sensitive to cold. I have been ever since.

Several aspects about weight loss may be factoring in here. Muscle burns more calories per pound than fat, but if you lost 100 pounds of fat, you may have added 10 pounds of muscle. The fat that you lost likely burned more calories than the additional muscle that you gained. You probably had a higher resting metabolic rate last year due the extra fat's metabolism than you do now. All fat cells put out heat from their metabolism but some fat cells will burn lipids to raise the bodies temperature when exposed to lower temperatures. Subcutaneous fat insulates your bodies core and helps you retain heat. In the summertime, more blood flow is directed near the surface of the skin to help dissipate heat like a radiator. When it becomes colder, less blood is directed near the surface of the skin to help retain heat. Many people find that their rings fit looser in the winter due to this effect of subcutaneous vascular constriction. It is also easier to retain heat in a larger body than in a smaller body due in part to the smaller ratio of surface area per pound in the larger body. I am a hospital pharmacist that commutes to work and I have lost over 100 pounds in the last year.
