A very interesting article.

What if bad fat isn't so bad.

40 g seems on the ok/low side. Of course depending what your definition of "normal" is or that your goals are. Or if you are male of female, or what your current weight is, or...

I'm no nutritionist, but what I usually find is that "normal" is defined as 20% - 30% of your caloric intake from fat. If a "normal" male takes in 2,000 calories a day the based on the normal percentages above then that would come out to 44-67 grams of fat a day.

I eat substantially more than that (usually about 30-35%) and eat anywhere between 1,800 - 3,500 calories a day (depending on how far I rode on a particular day). I have been able to maintain a consistent average 500-700 calorie a day defeceit for months and have been consistently losing 1 lb a week for a while now (I'm in no hurry). So for me, right now, I'm happy to keep it down to 80g a day on most days. I'm not saying that's healthy, but it really ain't too far out of the 30% range. I can't help it. I like steak .

That said, I realize my fat intake is a bit on the high side and will likely work on wrangling that number in to more the 25%-30% range as I get closer to my goal weight (170 lbs) and I have to work a bit harder to keep the 1 lb a week coming off.

Here is where I am likely to come in at today (if dinner goes as planned and I can avoid the cake that just popped up at the end of the isle at work )

I will have burned about 3,200 calories today. Not a bad day...hmmm...maybe I can squeeze in a small piece of cake. I heard it was homemade and really yummy

I'm not saying anyone should eat like me. In fact, I should cut back on the fat a bit. But so far my cholesterol is fine and it's working for me, for now. OH...and I need to eat more fruits and veggies. I'm really bad at that.

You should read Utne Reader. The latest issue has a series of articles that form a backlash to the "obesity epidemic" hysteria. According to Utne Reader, "fat people make easy targets in public policy and debate," and that's why obesity is being played up. You see, Air, according to Utne Reader, you are a victim of society!

Rant over. Let's see how effective Utne Reader is for lighting a wood stove.....

Yes. The mag is fit for burning. "If the problem of obesity is overstated, the solution - self willed weight loss - is science fiction." It claims Americans have to "starve", "overcome a genetically predisposed weight", "resist marketing", and "move to better neighborhoods" to lose weight. The complete absence of any acceptance of responsibility shouldn't shock me, but it still does.

One of the trolls on the chess newsgroups has been upset about my weight loss, since he can no longer call me a "500 pound butterball" to try to score points in debate. He recently wrote of my obesity, "Who made him do it?" The answer is that I made me do it. Just as I made me lose the weight. If I blamed anyone else, I wouldn't have lost an ounce.

Rant over.
