Back to try again.

I started riding last year. Rode 3 days a week in my basement on a trainer in the winter and then started
riding on the road when it warmed up. Then did something to my foot. Either my bike shoes or a bad pair of hiking boots. Anyways after that I stopped so I am going to give it another try. I had my shoes set up by the LBS, hopefully the foot pain wont return.
By the end of the year I hope to have lost 50 LBS and ride 50 miles in a day. WIsh me luck

Good luck!

By the way, what happened to your foot? I have been experiencing heel pain in my left foot for the past year or so. It subsides when I don't ride or work. I just wonder what could be the culprit.

You might want to get fitted for orthotics (shoe inserts). A buddy of mine was having serious heel pain issues which disappeared within a couple of weeks of wearing orthotics.

I had some metatarsalagia issues for a while which subsided when I got wider shoes (generally a problem cause by ill fitting footwear that pushes the bones in your foot together causing irritation of a nerve). So if you're experiencing numbness in your toes think about wider shoes and maybe a good orthotic with a metatarsal arch.

Welcome back. On the foot pain, I recently bought some Shimano Ultegra spd-sl pedals and I had massive amounts of pain. After 3 pairs of shoes I tried some new pedals, Look Keo Classics and the pain went away. Might try some different pedals.

Real bad pain in left foot behind my toes. My cleats where not set up right and my shoes probably dont fit the best. I need wides. But at the same time I had a pair of hiking boots that never broke in so it may have been part of it.
I go the SPecilized inserts but I think I will have to break down and buy either new pedals or differnt shoes. I really dont want to spend another 150 on experiments.

Look at Sidi Shoes and Crank Brothers Egg Beaters. Get the Sidi Mountian shoes like the Dominator, which IIRC, comes in wider sizes available and the Egg Beaters have 7º of float, or look at Speedplay Frogs with a lot more than that even. The Frogs though can have compatibility issues with shoes and the cleat can be damaged easily.

Sounds a lot like metatarsalagia, especially if you get any numbness in your 2nd, 3rd or 4th toe. Hate to say it but it sounds like you need new shoes, and to maybe play around with your cleat adjustment (mainly fore aft). Once I got the wider shoes (Sidi mega) and tweaked my cleats I've had very few problems. You could also try a pair of trail running shoes (which often have a harder sole than most) with flat pedal. Look style cleats can also help spread out the force of the pedal but then there's the whole walking on your heels thing. Best of luck figuring out that problem it can be a real bear.
