Shoeing a Footsore Clyde

Hi gang,

Here's my difficulty: I've got terrible feet. Between diabetic neuropathy, hammer toe, arthritis, and EEEE width, I haven't found a really great set of shoes. I'm using Sidi Bullets right now (Mega Width), but they hurt after about 20 miles. I get my walking-around shoes from New Balance - they've got some nice comfy roomy models. Is there anything equally comfy for cycling shoes?

Thanks!

There may be an answer out there, if so, these guys will know it.

However, it may be good to ride a clips/straps setup and a pair of normal shoes with a firm-ish sole... That may give you more options and a better fit.

If your NOT using clipless pedals, which require a special shoe, then just get a good running shoe with a stiff sole, and don't worry about it. If you are, then it gets a little tricky.

I don't have that problem, but maybe take the shoes to a shoe repair shop, and see if they can stretch them for you. You realize this is a fairly recent problem, 100 years ago, your wide feet were not a problem, you went to the shoe maker, and he measured your feet, and made a pair of shoes, needing a stiff sole you could bolt a cleat to, wouldn't have been a big problem. Now of course, most shoes like most other things, are made in that big slave labour camp called China, where everything is reduced to averages that can be made in high volume. So products for folks who do not fit the norm, are not available. Funny thing is, when part of those shoe maker shoes wore out, you took the shoes back to the shoe maker, who would repair them, a pair of shoes could last many years. Now you toss them in the trash and buy new ones, and by the time they fit properly they are worn out, and you begin again.

I have a similar problem with wide feet and problems with my toes/nails jamming into the toe box of any shoe I ride with except my Teva Hurricane sandals. I ride with these all year down to about 30 degrees and I use crank brothers 50/50 BMX style pedals and have no slipping problems or sore feet with this combo.......ever.
Nothing else has come close to the comfort I get using this combo and my performance has not suffered one bit riding without retention. I've tried a bunch of other pedals/shoes from toeclips to 'clipless' and sandals rock. Try them, your feet will thank you. Having your toes free to wiggle allows better circulation and cooling. I use wool socks for non-stinkiness and good wicking properties.

Google shoe maker or shoe repair near your home town. Ask the fellow to resole the shoes you have now so you can bolt a cleat to the bottom. These shoe repair guys are around and surprisingly inexpensive. I remember having a dress shoe resoled and it was only 9 dollars. The guy I went to advertised custom work so it's a possibility.

OK, perhaps I should be clearer. I have toe clips on my beater bike. My Go Fast/Go Far bike is clipless. So far as I can tell from Googling, Lake and Sidi own the wide shoe market. I have Sidi Bullets. Any opinions about mega width Sidi Dominators or Lake products? Does anyone else make a wide shoe with a little extra room in the toe box?

My feets thank you!

I can't help much, but I do have wear a size 13 shoe. The pair I own that fits the best are a 4E width. I have started doing some shopping for Cycling shoes but have not pulled the trigger on the purchase yet. According to Sidi's website, the Mega size is only a EE width. Lake's wide is also a EE.
