Typically as one can expect from mass media; uninformed, shallow sensationalism. Stupid would be to gracious of a word. This is below stupid, it's plain ignorant. No further comment, I tend not to trouble myself with that anymore, I feel better that way.

You bet !

A little off topic, but, I have read that a person would have to walk for seven hours straight to burn off a Super Sized Coke, fry and Big Mac.

Why I think this is just ridiculous:
Promoting McDonalds as being anything near healthy is foolish. I don't care what you eat there, I stand by my statement. Doing a particular diet out of spite (which is what it sounds like) isn't exactly intelligent, either.

This diet, and even saying it's an "idea" is foolish. Seriously, black coffee for breakfast? Uggh, I could scream.

Finally, my favorite, "at 300 pounds it's hard to do any exercise wihtout hurting yourself". YES, YOUR COLLEGE DEGREE REALLY SHOWS. Oh wait.

Listen folks, don't listen to idiots like this. I weighed over 500 pounds when I started on the treadmill. I was jogging on an elliptical at 475! I guess I'm lucky I'm not falling apart, because in the 300s I'm now endurance riding.

"Stories" like this, I'm sorry, just don't do anything good. America, stop looking for the easy way out and just do it the right way already.
It's like any of the other seemingly 4,294,967,295 diets out there. It's temporary, like all diets it has a termination point, and it's what happens after the termination point that is most important. In more then 90% of all cases the dieter returns to their old eating habits and they find the weight they lost who bring along some new found friends. The only true way to lose weight is to retrain your eating habits, by getting rid of the idea that food is a friend or a comfort, it's fuel and that's all it should be. Really if you want a comfort or a friend, get a dog, at least you will get some exercise, walking the dog.

The real issue here, I hate to see, diet without exercise, because it reinforces the "once I reach my goal, everything will be perfect" type thinking. I think they have it backwards, because the goal is a number on a scale, but once you reach it, then what. At 300lbs, I think the subject needs a sport, not a diet. Cycling is a good sport for the obese, because you can start slow, and work your way up, as you become a better cyclist and want to do more, it's not a huge stretch to start looking at the engine fuel supply and dealing with it, either on your own or by seeking professional help. The weight isn't the goal, the goal isn't a fixed point, it's to get better and better over time, you can use a bike computer to measure progress.

When people ask me, I tell them that i eat right and excercise. Mostly eat right that is.

Their eyes glaze over before I finish the sentence.

I have relatives that have had the lap band put in, others that do the HCG diet, but they don't excercise.

They may lose weight, but they are not healthy. In some cases they don't even lose weight, and put it back on because they didn't fix the underlying problem.

Whoever mentioned the number on the scale being the goal, hit it on the head for me. My goal is to live healthy, live long, and not have another heart attack. I have to eat healthy, most of the time, and I need the aerobic activity for my heart and cholesterol. Works for me and I just keep my mouth shut around others, unless they ask my advice, then I lay it on.. The more I ride, the more I can eat.

I remember reading one of Andrew Weil's books about a decade ago making fun of this with his guaranteed-to-work cheesecake diet. Although it's far from healthy, not even the biggest cheesecake fan will be able to tolerate it for more than a week. That person will naturally cut their consumption down to a point where they eat less calories than they use and they'll start losing weight.
