I've Been thinkng.... (Touring on the Allez!), + a JAM Encounter
So, to test it out as to how it does pulling a trailer, we did the grocery run with the Allez and the trailer, since my Schwinn is down right now anyway, and it did well! I'm thinking the Schwinn just got downgraded to a commuting bike only. That allows me to do a few things to it anyway.
Here's the Allez with about 55 pounds of groceries in the trailer....it did just fine! As you know, I use a kid trailer for touring, simply because I got a fantastic deal on the trailer......and it worked out so well, I decided to stick with it.
Here we are all set up with the basic set up for touring as well...
It's a good set up, and the Allez is just plain more comfortable to ride for me. We're thinking about a little tour in a couple of weeks and a shakedown short tour next weekend for a weekend camping trip.
One funny story out of todays ride. Some old guy apparently didn't like us being in the road. He passed us, pulled into a parking lot and walked the curb, screaming at me that taking my kids out on the road was just too dangerous (No kids in the trailer, just groceries). He also did a jerk toward the wife on her trike with his Escalade on the way by. Gotta love the jerks in their huge SUV's that think they own the road. He actually came real close to getting maced.....I thought he was actually going to try to knock me off the bike. Would have been a great time to have some video from the camera, huh?

Oh yeah, one more thing, the first errand ride wasn't enough for the wife, she wasn't happy only riding 10 miles. She wanted to do some more.

Glad to hear the wife is upping the miles! If it's any consolation, I witnessed several rude biker-biker interactions on RAGBRAI...some folks are just pr!kz. "On yer left" does not mean get the hell out of my way before I run you over!
I would have loved to have seen his face when he realized it was just groceries.

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

The obvious reply to that, delivered while looking the guy straight in the eyes: "You have a good point, sir, there are an awful lot of idiot drivers out there."

Wow, talk about irony... stopped to scream at you out of supposed concern your (presumed) child, and then intimidating your wife by swerving at her? I find myself wishing you had made use of that mace.

I'm sure he's glad I didn't. My mace is actually Bear Mace, and it's stronger than military grade. It's designed and formulated to flatten a 1500 pound bear. I got it after I expended my Bear Mace on the Wolves up in the Superior National Forest last Summer on tour.
