Thun Fun!

Some photos from my 20 mile ride with 'dercola' last Sunday on the Thun Trail from Pottstown to Birdsboro and back.

The ride began in Pottstown's Riverfront Park:

The Schuylkill River at the Rt 100 bridge:

'dercola's' bike on the trail bridge over the Schuylkill, with Roark in the background.

'dercola' at the Rt 724 grade crossing near Birdsboro. Years before the trail existed, PENDOT took out the old railroad bridge, so the trail grade crossing is about 10 percent on each side of the road. While we were there we saw someone who tried to ride up it on a mountain bike. He made it halfway and almost spilled while unclipping.

The trail:

There will be a ribbon cutting this Friday at 11:30am, behind Optimists Baseball field to "Officially" open the new little section of the trail that was completed about 5 weeks ago running into Birdsboro. I and others kind of blazed our own trail in same spot for the last couple years. Now it's official and nicely graveled. May be they will be giving out bikes at ribbon ceremony? I'll have to show up, should at least be free lunch at 11:30am don't you think?

Guy, can you get them to finish the rest of the trail too?

Also, we need to get you and "dercola" together for a ride.

Well I joined the Rails to Trails network, paid some more for the special auto plate, they should have enough money now. Be happy to ride with anyone except in hot weather. Although the trail is certainly better then the road in hot weather.

Nice ride guys, looks like you had a great time.

Derecola, I used to have that same seat bag until the zipper ripped out of it. I would reccomend you cut the velcro off it and use zip ties to secure it to your seat rails. Run the ties through the plastic eyelets. I don't know if you have had the same problems I did, but mine would constantly come undone with just a tube, multi tool, wallet and cell phone in it. Just a suggestion, oh and snazzy bike!

On my way to the ribbon cutting I took a better shot of some close bollards. Although as I look at the pic, it's not that bad. A good foot of clearance. Just looks a lot smaller when you approach at speed.

Ribbon cutting drew a surprising small crowd for 11:30 am on a Friday. Although most looked to be retired, as am I.

No free bike give away. Had bottled water and granola bars. Speeches way too long. Got a bottle of water and rode back to Pottstown. Another 13 miles on the riding log.
