Attempted 80 miler

Many of you probably do not know me, but I live out near Spokane Washington, I rode a recent route with Dbikingman on wednesday that was 50 miles. I felt pretty good afterwards and thought on taking the 80 mile route with my brother who handled the last big ride we did (70) like it was nothing. The thing about this little offshoot 30 mile route from the 50 was that it was all hill and headwind, you have to love the west plains:notamused:.

MY brother did not prepare himself with good sleep and proper hydration the night before. At about 50 there was a noticeable salt lick growing out of his face. I was carrying 1 liter of water and my brother had his .5 liter, but he ended up drinking about .25 liter of mine and still cramped up. We were forced at 66 miles to call it day, it has been near a 100 all day and it was really getting to him.

We did the 66 miles in 3:45:00 which I thought was really good considering those hills, we would range from 10-14 mph on those buggers. All and all I think I will wait till autumn or spring to hit that route again, as it was too much for me right now during the summer with those hills. I know I could have finished the ride, even though it would have been a 15 mph average to the finish.

You have to pace yourself on long rides. Did a 100 miles yesterday. All flat roads. Hot 80* to 96* Sunny with High Humidity. Drank Seven bottles of fluids.
Keep riding, Go slower, Drink Drink Drink.
Have fun.

Ants thanks for the heads up on the course. I know on our ride I felt like I didn't drink enough and didn't get a chance to eat. I plan on doing the 50 again. Maybe we can do the 80 next spring or so, to prepare for the STP if that is still in the plans. I rode today and it seemed hotter then normal, even though I have ridden on hotter days don't know what that was and I at least had some shade and only a small segment with a headwind.

So did it feel good to kick your brothers butt for a change?

Its all in the eating and drinking
I did one (85 miles) 2 weeks ago and died
then one week ago same route but ate a small risoto (left overs) at 5.30 am b4 I got on the bike
a banana 30km , a bacon and egg s/wich and muesli bar at 80km , and a banana at the 100km
plus 3 bottles of gatorade , 2 water
and it was a cool day with little sun
So in essence, if your thirsty your allready de hydrated, you should be drinking a bottle an hr
and find food for fuels that will sustain you

In a way it felt good to kick my brothers butt, too bad it was because of his poor decision not hydrate and bring enough water for the trip. I ordered a water bottle holder that clamps onto the seat post for him, since he does not have mounts on his frame.

I was smart enough to buy 4 power bars to split between us for the ride. The plan was to eat them at 30 mile increments, my bro was good at waited till the first 30 but by the time we hit 45 he was chewing on another. My brother certainly learned his lesson though, so next time we will one leave before 7 if it is going to be a crazy hot day, number 2 have plenty of water.

Oh man a bacon and egg sandwich sounds delicious, next time I will make sure my bike route draws near store that sells one :).
