Using a larger bike

A family friend gave me his old '01 Giant OCR 3... I really wanna start using the bike, but its large frame, which fits me a little to big. Giants suggest its made for 5'11" - 6'3" people and I'm only 5'9"ish. Is there anything I can do to make it a better fit? Btw, I'm totally new to road biking and really want to use this bike to its full potential.

Thanks!

You could start with a short stem to shorten the cockpit length. If he gave it to you, as in you have nothing invested at this point and the bike is yours, I would shop around for a used medium frame and transfer the components to the new bike.

Scratch that. I just looked up the geometry for the giant OCR's and the large doesn't really look THAT big. I am 5'8" and prefer a bike that is 55cm x 55cm. The large OCR has a 55cm seat tube and a 57.5 top tube. I would just put a 90 or 95mm stem on it and call it good.

You can try lowering the seat and moving it forward on it's rails but a lot of this bike fit is going to depend on your torso length and your ability to stand over it. If your friend doesn't mind take the bike to your LBS and have them fit it to you the best they can.

That's a nice friend you have there, be sure to take good care the bike and log many happy miles on it.

Sheesh, I need new friends, lol.

+1 on trying a stem adjustment. The stand over isn't as important as your comfort in the cockpit, as long as you aren't risking sterilization in an emergency exit from the seat

The bike isn't too big. You just need to learn to accessorize properly!

I thought Giant bicycles were made with sloping toptubes. If so, standover should not be an issue!
