Got my Garmin Edge 305!

Ok, so I'm a total geek and I love being able to keep track of stats and track my performance. Yesterday I got my Garmin Edge 305 that I ordered from Amazon.com (just under $250 with 2 day shipping) but I forgot the chest strap for the HRM so I had incomplete stats yesterday. Today I remembered it and thought I'd report my first stats!

Background: 26 y/o male, 6', 270lbs, started at 318lbs in February. Just bought a bike and started cycling about 11 days ago. This is ride #8 I believe total.

Distance: 20.4 miles
Time: 1:08:03
Ave Speed: 18.0mph
Max Speed: 28.4
Ave Cadence: 80
Max Cadence: 110
Ave HR: 144bpm
Max HR: 173bpm
Calories burned: 1815

I'm pretty pleased. I honestly thought my Cadence would be quite a bit lower than that. I was also pleased to see that my resting pulse is somewhere between 52-56 when I was playing around with the HRM at work before my ride. I'm in decent cardio shape because of all the hours I've put in at the gym and on the jogging track. I think now I'm waiting for my leg muscles to catch up as they seem to be the limiting factor as far as how long/fast I can ride. Today was my first 20+ mile ride and my first day I averaged 18+ mph. I had been keeping track of those on a Sigma cycle computer before I got my Garmin. I'm just thrilled that I found an activity that keeps my heart rate that high for that long and have a BLAST doing it. It's a million times better than the elliptical at the gym. I'm dreading winter and already trying to decide if/how I can live without cycling as much during the winter especially because it will be dark by the time I get off work.

Yep, I love my 305. Give you a heads up though. One day this will happen guaranteed. You will go to turn it on and it will not come on. Don't panic, just select the Mode and Reset buttons at the same time for about 3 or 4 seconds. Select your on button and it will start as it should. It a known issue and I don't think there is a fix, but once you know how to correct it, it's no big deal. Also, look into Sports Tracks to import your data into versus the Garmin Software, also save your money and don't bother using the online software from Garmin, it sucks.

As far as winter, since you have the cadence monitor, get a trainer, pop on the magnet, turn off the gps in the systems->general->GPS to off from normal and start spinning away.

One more head's up for you, gearhead - cut the calories in half from what your Garmin tells you. I have the same unit, and if you go by the calories it tells you, you will NEVER lose weight. The voice of experience here. The way they calculate the calories is way off. So estimate your real calorie burn at roughly 50% of the reported figure.

I too ride with an Edge 305. It's really great to see your rides on Google Earth, especially mountain biking, you see cool places that you were near, places to explore on the next ride.

+1 gazillion. The calorie counter on it is useless.

Congrats on your Edge 305 purchase. I also picked one up this year and really, really enjoy it. Had to use the reset trick on it once.

Your ride stats blow my mind. Assuming you weren't riding downhill the whole time, you must be in incredible aerobic shape to ride that fast at such a low heart rate, given your height/weight.

Its very flat which I'm sure helps. I would actually like to find some climbs around here. I just moved to the area so I don't know where to find any hills yet. I will do some exploring this weekend. . . I don't know about being in incredible aerobic shape though. My theory is that my muscle structure must be pretty good in order to have moved me around at 300lbs+ for so long! Most people guestimate my weight to be a solid 40lbs less than I actually weigh so I think I am rather big boned and carry it well.

The BF guys turned me on to this software:https://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/
See if you like it better than the TC software that comes with the Edge.........Hope you find it as useful as I have!

Yep, first thing I did was download the SportTracks software after I did some research on the 305 before I purchased it. Its far better than the program that Garmin provided and I'm sure I'm not even using it to its potential yet. The maps are very nice though.

ditto on the Sport Tracks. Love that software and be sure to add the weather and power plugins. They seem to give a more accurate calorie total.

@uncadan8, I agree and noticed the calories were more than cut in half after I installed the wind and power plugins.
