Meet Abby Normal

Ugh,

Just back from the Doc. My three time surgically repaired back has been giving me fits and kept me off the bike for the last three weeks, and will cost me my Live strong Challenge this weekend.

The doc tells me my right leg is 1.5 inches shorter than my left leg. Odd, it wasn't before :notamused: and I have a pronounced toe out with my right foot. He seems to think it's related to whole non telescoping right leg issue, which is making walk strangely and making by back hurt, which makes me walk funny, which makes my back hurt, which makes me walk funny, well, yea.

It's a muscular issue, and not structural, but I have lots of new stretches and weight routines to do. The funny thing is, he told me to ride my bike so long as I can tolerate it. He thinks it will be good for helping with stretching. Sadly, I have a relatively low mileage limitation per ride for the next two weeks but it's more than I've been getting in lately.

We've got to work on getting some scar tissue broken lose, and that's probably going to employ new levels of Nano Sucknology I have yet to encounter. At least it's a physical therapy (physio for you Euro and Canadian types) and not another surgery. They would have to catch me before I do that again, not that I'm too hard to catch right now.....:roflmao2:

So, I'm building base miles about 5 miles at a time for the next two weeks providing I can actually manage to get my leg over the saddle and get going.:(

So that's why you walk funny! I jsu thought it was from watching too many home decorating shows!:D

Seriously, hope everything works out!

TX, I'm sorry to read about this.

You may respond to the physical therapy faster than you think. My first three sessions were difficult, but after that it got easier. Having two women pull on my left leg was interesting as well.

Is your 'non-telescoping' right leg the result of a shortened hamstring?

Aggressive adjustments are not an option for me. I have two titanium cages implanted in my lower spine, so slow and steady changes carry the day for me. This gonna take a while.

Nope. It looks like I have some pelvic alignment issues and my altered walk to deal with them has caused some muscle issues in the right Glute and some spasms in my lower back. There is a lot, I mean tons, of scar tissue at play here too. Three surgeries are a contributing factor to the scar tissue. It's actually sensitive to the touch, and you can feel the tissue build up at my waist line.

the silver lining is you get to ride. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I thought everyone in TX walked that way.

Many, many moons ago a fellow I worked with wife used some form of traction while she slept. Something hospitals used to apply a gentle pull. I wonder if something like this while your sleeping would be helpful. I'm no medical doctor, but I'm not pulling your leg either. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I had surgery on my shoulder. Went to therapy 6 times in two weeks. Made a little improvment. Then I got a massoge at a strip club. Doubled my range of motion is 10 minutes.

HI good luck Sir

HI,
I often wonder where they find people who do Physical Therapy, they are one tuff cookies, they can make a grown man wimper like a baby. They know how to make people talk.
So I hope it goes well, be sure and take your pain meds before PT.

Ironically, after todays ride, I have a Brooks B-17 that is about an inch lower on the right side than the left.:innocent: It is honey colored and sagging a little, but laced. Has some minor scuffs on the leather from flipping down a limestone trail. PM me if you are interested, it could solve some fitting issues.:thumb:

Go visit a rolfer and have them assess you. I was skeptical about rolfers until I became friends with one. I'm doing a 10 week program that re-integrates all your muscle fascia and it's great so far. I have injuries from 20 years ago that are melting away.

Worth a try if the doctor says it's muscular and not skeletal.

hope this helps ...

Berardino

I'll pass, thanks. Putting sunscreen on a guy's back while on tour was bad enough.

txvintage 10-22-08 08:02 AM

I love physical therapy. Before I went yesterday I could get on my bike. Today, not so much.

I have no desire to walk beside my bike.:notamused:

As my work night wore on, I felt about as bad as I have in long time. I was so looking forward to my "prescribed/recommended" five miles today. I even put platform pedals on so I wouldn't have to deal with clipping in and out.

It's very sunny and 60 degrees outside right now. Where so I file my protest?

Behind me.

I warned you it would be a little rough at first. Try again tomorrow.

Neil B.

PS I STILL have no desire to feel the scar tissue at your waist.

Sorry to hear about your back and your pain Tx. Hope it starts to recede (the pain)soon with a little more therapy. Heads up!

txvintage 10-23-08 10:33 AM

Well, no riding today but I did get in some good stretching and light weight work.

Tomorrow is D-day. The epic, flat, 5 miler awaits.

Sorry TX, I just got around to reading this thread.

Man! It just stinks that you've been handed this big ol' bucket of SUCK!
Heal up my friend...we're thinking of you.

txvintage 10-24-08 10:10 AM

Woohoo. 4 Chilly miles.

I am even still halfway up the evolutionary chain. I'm working my way up to walking upright, but at least I still have opposable thumbs.

Jtgyk, This week marks the beginning of my 4 day work weeks for the rest of the year. Had a bunch of vacation and we're short handed, so I took off every Monday for the rest of the year except 1. this means no Sunday night work, which means Sunday rides! Well, soon it might mean rides........maybe next week or the week after.
