What is up with this METRIC Century BS?

Why not just say you rode over 62 miles? I could see if you live in a country that uses the Metric System but here in the Good Old US, we still use the unpopular Standard system.

If you are going to ride a Century then go ride a hundred miles and then post about your first CENTURY. However, to come in and post your Metric Century is belittling the CENTURY Ride.

The reason that a CENTURY is a milestone is because there are 3 digits for the mileage. It is great to see your computer hit 99 miles and then turn over to 100.

Taint no comparison to The Last 10 Miles, of a 100 mile ride.

I rarely get mixed up in these sorts of pissing contests, but the OP really pissed me off.

Sure, tear someone down for being fit enough to be able to ride 65 miles. Tear someone down for being excited about his accomplishment. Great, good for you. Do you feel better now?

Wouldn't it have been much more positive to congratulate him or her on a job well done? But then I'm likely talking to myself here.

If you haven't got something positive to say, then tuck your fingers away and keep them from the keyboard.

jesspal, big congratulations on your first metric! That's wonderful.

To answer yur question as to why a Metric is called a metric? It's because there are 2 dominant standards of measure. It could just as easily be measured in Stadia, which is an archaic Greek measurement based off of a soldiers stride of +/- 38 inches.

Any way you measure it, a 62 mile ride is a huge accomplishment, especially when you consider the start point of some of us.

Yep.... My first ride of 5 miles was last November 5, since then, I remember my first 25 mile ride, my first time over 50 miles, my first "Metric" and My first "Century"..... There are many milestones and points of achievment along the journey.... The OP probably doesn't "Get It"..... Sad

Darn, that means I gotta get rid of that metric socket set my wife gave me for Christmas!

I don't see the problem if the poster uses 'metric' before century. I've done some (advertised as) metric centuries that I know are accomplishments. The Alpine Challenge is one that I know not many other riders can complete, or even attemp! A ride is a ride as long as it's described properly.

Wrong. I'll bet 90% of the hardware on your bike is metric.

Would you feel better if people continually wrote about riding a 100 fathoms, 100 furlongs, or 100 leagues?

It never occurred to me to do a metric century. I think that is a great idea. I will just have to live with knowing I am less of a man for not doing a real one. Somehow, after riding 65 miles, I doubt I will have any trouble sleeping.

Now I know why I get all that email spam. It isn't just spam. They know the only reason I haven't ridden 100 miles is because I have an incredibly tiny penis. Maybe after using some of their products I will be enough of a man to measure up.

The dude did 62 miles on dept mtb bike with slicks. That's pretty darn good! If I remember correctly, you were whining about feeling the pain on a flat trail 16 mile ride while riding a Madone!

Last week I rode 6 rides for an average of 134.192 Kilometers per ride.
You keep getting those e-mails because you might need them.

I doubt the CENTURY Ride has that big of an inferiority complex that it can't handle talk of a Metric Century. In fact, I bet the Century Ride probably doesn't even feel the need to overcompensate for its length by capitalizing itself like that.

I heard you. I agree with you. 60+ miles is huge....at least to me. Sure the term metric century might be a tad lame, but 60+ miles is huge.
