Anyone having problems resisting warm foods as the weather changes?

So, Ive been having problems staying away from comfort foods. I try to focus on salads, nice salad bar at work. Then I see the Au Gratin potatoes with ham chunks.

And instead of getting one or the other.... I have both *frown*. Been going this way off and on for a couple weeks.

I'll do healthy stuff like a 10k walking race that I finished in under 1:30, but then the next day at lunch it's White Castle, and way too much of it.

Things are good at home, not really stressed about work or school, wedding is still months away (enough that I can get rid of some of this weight beforehand), and money to pay for it is coming along fine.

I just cant seem to get past eating more. I rode a lot last week (30+ miles) and I mixed in some Wii boxing even last night.

I'm starting to get depressed by my lack of willpower.

I'm eating a cheesesteak as I write this. No point in doing all this riding and exercising if I can't enjoy the foods I like. Everything in moderation. Have the au gratin, just get 1/2 a serving and eat it w/ the salad and go easy on the dressing. Ate too much? Add some miles to your ride to compensate. The holidays are right around the corner so now's a good time to up the mileage anyway since we'll all be enjoying an extra plate or two pretty soon.

If you want to save some big calories with your salad order your dressing on the side. Dip your fork into the dressing then spear your veggies. You'll still get a taste of the dressing without going through a quart of it.

Don't feel bad about an occasional treat, just don't make it a habit!

The salad im always careful. fat free dressing 40 calories a packet. no more than 2 packets. it was a small salad, eggs, turkey, cheese, broccoli, peas, tomato and mixed greens.

Im just pissed at myself for even debating about the potatoes. i really wanted not to eat them, and they werent even that good.

Here's another thought on the matter.

Don't deprive yourself of food that you want to eat. Last night I made a major comfort food type meal. A pound of Ziti (cooked) mixed up with a pound of cooked hot italian sausage, homemade sauce, 2 cups of ricotta, 2 cups of mozarella, and a sprinkle of breadcrumbs on top, and baked at 350 for 30 minutes. Granted, this is a meal for 8 (or the 4 of us for 2 nights). Really good! But I only had 1 moderate sized helping.

That's the test. Eat what you want, but moderate the portion to a sensible size. This way you don't get major cravings and binge. I've found this to be the most successful method for me. I've lost nearly 50 pounds since late April and I'm not missing anything at all.

True and I have the appropriate weather gear except for my face. Need a stocking mask, and lights. Both I can have this weekend. Dont need the lights for the way in, but may on the way home. It's going to be in the 50's so I can do without the stocking mask the next two days, just have to figure out how much rain my slicks can handle!

Slicks are better for rain than knobbies. More surface area and don't worry about hydroplaning, it's not a car. For your face, just do what your mother did: slap some vaseline on your face, then put a balaclava on and go outside to play. Or grow a beard.

Hmmm.. The comfort food will always be there - but for now - it's not your food. You can make it one day....Just think of it as - Just for Today that is not my food. How about a nice hot cup of tea after your salad, k? So maybe I am out of line - but hey - Think Tea!! Or diet hot chocolate. Ok - can ya do it today??

I low carb so getting nice warm LC comfort food is no problem.

Why not make your own and bring it with? You have more control over what's in it and it costs way less. And then you can also measure it out to fit into your calories better.

I always have trouble resisting food. Last night my weakness was pizza. I did ride my bike to go pick it up though.

If you dont allow yourself to eat some food like that every now and then its gonna make thing so much harder. Back when I played College football and was trying to drop weight I said on the weekends I could eat two meals of what ever I want, but keep the portions within reason. It might be better for a normal person to do that one meal a week, and make it on the same day, as a reward of some sort. It worked for me back then but I was still eating 4500 calories on the diet. How I miss those days.

I fill my water bottle with the au jus from a french-dip sandwich.
Sipping on warm au jus while I ride takes my mind off of eating.

Yes, I am fighting the urge to dive into a big bowl of potatoes or something.
I eat lots of veggies (non-starchy ones) during the day along with lean protein. I'll eat cold veggies in the summer but not now! I am going to dive into a bowl of cut green beans and turkey sausage in a few minutes. Yum! If the beans were cold I'd be cruising the refrigerator for leftover birthday cake!

Everything in moderation. Eat whatever you like, it just a matter of stopping once you start. That's my problem! It's like any other addiction. I'm addicted to food and I'm better off not even eating certain foods because I won't be able to stop. It's all about finding your personal balance.

I usually do better than I have been, especially over the past few weeks. I have a goal im trying to hit before Thanksgiving and I keep shooting myself in the foot. I can still make it, I just need to buckle down, really work, and make sure that when I do give in for comfort foods, its the right food in the right amounts.

My wife and I usually take one day a week, always Saturday because we weigh in for weight watchers saturday morning, and splurge. We always look forward to that one day to enjoy ourselves and have the things we do deprive ourselves throughout the week. I also try to ride as often as i can to allot myself some extra calories into the day.

My current cold weather supper is veggie stew. You can use any veggies you have in the crisper, cut into chunks. Last night I used up 1/2 a butternut squash, 1/2 red onion, 2 zucchini, 1 beet, 2 parsnips, 2 carrots, 3 tomatoes that were sitting in the crisper. The onion I sauteed in 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil, added 4 crushed garlic cloves, then added 1 cup of dried red lentils, and 4 cups of water. I let it simmer for 15 minutes while I chopped up the veggies into chunks. After 15 minutes the lentils are nearly cooked so I added the rest of the veggies and 3 bay leaves, salt and pepper. Cook until the beets are tender. Yes, the colour of the stew will be violently red-purple. But that's part of the fun!

It was great last night for the two of us (I roasted a skinned chicken leg for my DH), and there is plenty left for supper tonight.

The title of the thread confuses me. Why do I need to avoid warm foods? Tonight for dinner I'm probably going to have some tom yum noodle soup with chicken, warm in both senses of the word.

Most of the time, I eat warm foods. If you're going low carb, a pot of some kind of bean soup is wonderful. Warm, filling and very nutritious. There are lots of other options tho, and there's no reason to eat a meal that literally leaves you cold. You'll just be sad and miserable.

Don't instantly equate salads with healthy or what you need right now (depending on climate and amount of exercise). You'll probably better of with cooked foods (lots of veggies) and some healthy fats (thinks oils, not melted cheese -> too hard to digest at times).
