pwned a roadie

Yup, pwned a roadie....and his little dog, too!

(By roadie, I mean a person on a bicycle.)

One of my goals has been to unicycle around White Rock Lake, which is a nice 10 mile loop of bicycle trails in Dallas. So here a while back, I got a 28" unicycle, faster than the 20" I had been learning on, and spent an extra $50 for the most comfortable seat available. So I finally got out there this afternoon to give it a try. I was riding along all right, but kept getting passed by everyone, and I mean everyone, old, young, fat, fit, pulling trailers, little kids on little kid bikes, you name it. But finally, I did manage to pass one guy that was riding his bike very slowly while walking his little fluffball of a dog. So I did my mental victory dance and kept on riding. And I did finally make it all the way round. Still had some seat-comfort issues. I think I can make that seat 50% more comfortable by losing 1/3 of my weight. But that may be a while. Had a terrible time free-mounting a couple of times- can do that on my smaller unicycle, but on this one, sometimes it works and sometimes it just doesn't.

Speaking about uni's! We saw this dude on the trail lastweekend. A unicycle with a big wheel. Maybe 5 ft in diameter. He was doing pretty good but I noticed something different. He had a post and box(?) up between his legs. We were wondering what it was. I post with a cooler (?), an armrest (?)

The normal "big" unicycle is a Coker-style with 36" wheel. The post is a handlebar. One of the things it accomplishes is that it lets you shift your weight off the saddle or move around on the saddle without dismounting. It also goves you a place to put your computer. Not sure what the box would have been- computer, or flat-fixing stuff or lunch? There are larger unicycles, but they don't have pneumatic tires, so you don't often see them.

People can ride those 36" unicycles at 15 mph, but that involves spinning like crazy. You also get into control issues. If you get a wee bit off-balance in the forward direction, you correct by momentarily speeding up the pedaling. If you're already riding as fast as you can, you're just in for a good wreck.

Commuting on a unicycle would be awesome... but I'd want health insurance first

Rock on with the uni! I'm far too uncoordinated to ride one, but I've seen a couple people on organized rides using uni's instead of bicycles. (Most notably; Chilly Hilly earlier this year. 30+ miles with ~2800' of gain!)
