Clyde sets new speed record --- 160.7 mph!!!!

The iron clad proof (you know anything you see on a computer is true)

The machine (obviously more to it than meets the eye)

Ok, not really, just some bizarre computer malfunction.

But while we're at it, what's the fastest you've gone? Mine is 47.7mph and was scared poooless.

JonnyHK 12-23-08 10:39 PM

About 80km/h (or so said the computer) down Olivers Hill outside Frankston (Melbourne, AUS). Nice long straight downhill run, popular with local riders.

Young, silly, pedalling like mad. Bike was jittery and I was just on the wrong side of terrified.

Fastest I've been since then would be about 60km/h.

jaxgtr 12-23-08 10:43 PM

Mine is about 40 coming off the Acosta Bridge and the I noticed the big pile of sand at the bottom that a work truck just dumped. I was was breaking like made and using my big butt as a wind break, luckily I slowed down fast enough to make it through safely.

PlatyPius 12-23-08 10:59 PM

My fastest to date was 54mph; on a gravel road outside Laramie Wyoming. On a mountain bike. My fastest on a road bike is only slightly slower. 52mph going down a very long hill just outside of my town; about 2 miles from my house. The road curves and goes through a covered bridge at the bottom, and is followed by an immediate 60° curve once out of the bridge. I hit the curve before the bridge doing 44mph and came out of the bridge at 36mph. I think I almost underwent spontaneous bowel release. lol. It was definitely exciting!

I've tickled 60mph heading down Fremont Pass into Leadville. Long straight and smooooth pavement meant tuck and go go go!

Caleab 12-24-08 07:23 AM

37mph on my last ride. Haven't tackled any major downhills except that one.

as for the OP...
My wireless computer will do the same thing at my LBS. It's something to do with the EMF from the flourescent lights (in my case anyway) interferring with the wireless signal.

My fastest registered readout was 63mph, but that was in a crash where the bike and I were upside down in mid-air. (And I was only doing about 20mph when I crashed.)

My fastest real speed was 54.6 during the Summits of Bothell ride this summer. Crazy straightaway downhill, new pavement, long runout... I just went for it.

bautieri 12-24-08 09:00 AM

My fastest was 48mph on a nice curvy downhill. I don't care to go any faster as it scarred the living bejebus out of me. Once I get up over 40mph any more I can't help but wonder just how tightly I clamped that quick release.

bautieri 12-24-08 09:01 AM

Oh and you might want to replace your computers battery. You will get these odd super human speeds when the battery is going dead.

Little Darwin 12-24-08 09:24 AM

Any time I get over about 35 I start feathering the brakes because I don't trust them to stop me from much faster if I need them to.

In my young adulthood when I weighed a lot less, and was much more invincible (I was a Marine after all), I used to just get into a tuck and ride when I ran out of gears... I didn't have a speedometer. I did used to pass cars which were rare on my commute, and I believe the speed limit was 45 mph, so I assume I must have been doing a touch more than 50.

Damn! That makes me envious. I was doing lots of rides in the CO Rockies last summer, but I was always forced to drag brakes in order to negotiate all the hair-pin turns, so I rarely broke 45mph. When I used to run the Garmin 305, I had frequent bursts into triple digits. The 705 I'm using now seems less inclined to do that.

I've had taht malfunction before. I thought maybe the sensor managed to move away from the magnet, just enough to go whacky!:D

Fastest is on a short 3/4 downhill on the tandem. 56 mph without trying or pedaling. I'm sure it could have been much faster with a longer hill or if we tried but that's just too darn fast. Bike was stable but shades and helmets were rattling crazy!...And just too fast to put Gina in that situation IMO. So I avoid dh's on the tandem when I can.

On the single, 45 is no biggie. On one of the climbing centuries, it finishes off with a 30 mile dh, no stops at 30-45 mph! Now that's fun!:D

jesspal 12-24-08 12:17 PM

37.7 new top speed down a 1/4 mile bridge. Only opportunity to go down hill here in FL.

ken cummings 12-24-08 12:21 PM

70 MPH down the I-70 frontage road into Denver in a faired recumbent trike. Bad move: the brakes were not up to stopping safely and I started getting lift from the hull at that speed.

:eek::eek::eek:
Are you talking about 40 / Mt Vernon Cyn?
The last time I took that road I was getting SLAMMED by crosswinds!
The thought of having a hull gives me nightmares!

I'd have had to wash out my skivvies...:twitchy:

foehn 12-24-08 02:14 PM

My fastest was 200 mph--but I was under some major electrical power lines. . .

youcoming 12-24-08 09:08 PM

92.2km/h could have been higher but I blew a rear spoke. What an awfull time for that to happen. Damn near fell off the bike by the noise of it I thought the 7 riders were after me. Since then the fastest I've went is 84km/h. One guy I ride with did the same hill at 114km/h. This guy is a little nuts.

BearsysRevenge 12-24-08 09:45 PM

I don't know the actual speed, but about 6 years ago(age 13) I went to a summer camp at a ski resort which got converted to a bike resort in the summer.

I'd never mountain biked before and my first trail was an expert level bike trail(I meant to go onto a beginner but made a wrong turn).

Needless to say, about halfway down the hill while riding the brakes the whole time I hit a ditch and launched about 25-30 yards. The bike got totaled and I laid on the ground in pain crying until two guys went past me and called the camp medics when they got to the bottom.

That really sucked.

Richard_Rides 12-24-08 11:00 PM

Bike 40 mph.
Boeing 737-400 455 mph (friend let me handle controls in flight, no passengers)

seenoweevil 12-27-08 06:33 PM

41.5 mph down a short steep hill not far from the house. MUCH more fun than biking/walking UP said hill.

Tom Stormcrowe 12-27-08 10:28 PM

54 mph here in Indiana, out in the Rockies, I've topped 70 on a DH.

I used to live in W Lafayette; Where the heck did you do 54??? Drafting the Cinzano truck?:p

Kid-Cycle 12-28-08 12:09 AM

My fastest is 44 mph going down a long smooth decent in Los Osos CA area. I had no problems with bike and could have easily gone faster; the operator started thinking about what would happen if tire flatted and 44 was plenty fast enough... funny how this thought never entered my mind 20 years ago.
