It's a question that many in your situation ask on a daily basis. There have been thousands of opinions expressed. I responded to your request in the commuter forum... I'll stick by my opinion there, as well as the one I posted in the thread referenced above.

Well after my experience with giant, I would take them off the list..
Not sure about the others.

Price range basically dictates the quality level of the components. Test ride and buy the one you like best.

From personal experience, garage sales won't get you far unless you are lucky as Tom Brady and him getting Gizelle (sp?). I would keep an eye on Craig's list... unless you live in a one horse town you will be able to find some good deals. If you have some money, check eBay, it is more expensive... but they have more selection. The main problem I ran in to at garage sales is you show interest in an older bike that they are selling for $25 then they say "Oh! Sorry that price was from last year, it is actually $100." <---- Actual experience.

If you are new to riding, you might want to start with a low-end bike from a bike shop. A hybrid would probably be a good idea, and would work fine for your short commute.

I bought a $225 low-end Giant Cypress from a bike shop. I initially had some rear-wheel issues (I was heavier than you), but eventually bought a better wheel.

I later moved to a recumbent, and started commuting on it, then recently upgraded a few things on the Giant, and now use it as my primary commuter.

I just figure it's safer to make sure you are going to ride before spending a lot of money.

If the route is fairly flat, practically ANY bike will work. If it's hilly, you need gears, but just about any bike with gears will work. In other words, in terms of making 4 miles a day, it won't much matter because they all qualify. Get something fun to ride; that'll motivate you to ride more.

On the disk brake- you probably don't really need it. I've used a crappy mountain bike, and the brakes had problems, but that's because it was a crappy bike, not because rim brakes are bad.

thanks guys.

for the distance its 4 mile eatch way so at least 8 miles a day..plus some on weekend..no trails but some dirt road.

i saw a deal or mabe not...a trek 1000 = 300$ is it a good bike for us big guys.?

thanks to all the response.

again not in a hurry here to spend cash..still in deap winter and wont commute this winter,,so have like 2 month to get one.

I started out at 6'1" at 240lbs and yes the Trek will hold you. It's not the frame you need to worry about but the wheels. I have broke 5 spokes over the last two years but none since I got it rebuilt. I'm now at 228lbs.

As far as a used Giant Cypress, I paid $50 each for two nice ones. Sold one, kept the other one for my wife.

+1 for four miles each way, pretty much any bike will work. So get the one you like.
