The start of something good
I just got this Nashbar Touring Frame, fork, headset and hanger from a guy on CL for $150.
I was going to get one from the Nashbar site on sale, but they were out of 58's.
Also, with Txvintage's brilliant scrounging techniques (nice Deore cranks and DR's)...I should be up and running
in the not too distant future.
It'll be nice to finally have a bike that's not too small (or slightly too large) but juuuust right!

Did I forget to figure in my commission, finders fee, fuel surcharge, sales tax, local tourism tax, and transaction fees?
Let me see, carry the 1, multiply the square root of 237, divided by .47.
Comes up to about a cup of home brewed coffee.
BTW, what size is that steering tube? Are we going to need a 1 1/4 or a 1 inch stem?

The magic Harbor Freight calipers are measuring 1 1/8 ". Does that make any sense?

And the brifters ordered on Ebay came in, too.
I spent yesterday cleaning and degreasing the used Deore stuff (still have to clean and work on the rust spots on the canti's).
Today I took the frame to an LBS to get a Bottom bracket, spacer and ringbolt for the cranks, crank bolts, New Front Der (shimano alivio...the Deore was the wrong size for the seat tube), cable hangers for the front and back brakes, and cable stops for the down tube.
I still have to get some more spacers for the steerer tube (hence the TWO stems), seat post, brakes and cable housings.
Here's how far I got today:

I just talked to the wheel guy...The hub is OK as it is...it's the spacers and axle that are the problem.
It would take getting the right size spacers, cutting the axle, and redishing the wheel.
The estimate is about $50. I'd end up with my Deore hub, CR-16 rims and 40 spokes.
Or there is a chance to get a 36 spoke wheelset for $70.

Just keep an eye out and you never know what you will find. I got the wheelset for my winter build of ebay for 75+ shipping. Smooth as butter XT hubs laced to Salsa Delgado rims. Used but very true and in excellent shape. By the way you cannot go wrong with Deore levels parts. I went a little old school on my build with a Deore FC-M730 cranks, XT Cantilevers, Xt rear Derailure, DX Front Derailure, 8 speed Ultegra Barends. It is my do everything build based on a early 90's Specialized Crossroads frame. Frankly it kind of looks like my Mountain bike and road bike got together and had an kid

Lol, he has a seat post but I forgot to take it over to him when I took the Deore stuff.
The 140 wheel will fit, you will just have to hand spread the rear drops when you put it in. We do it with 126mm spaced rears and 130 spaced wheels all the time.

The other stem is acting as a spacer until I decide what length to cut the steerer tube. I actually may keep the 2nd stem and mount a short bar for mounting lights, etc.
But, yes I DO have lots of stems to trade....brand new...never mounted.
Bear in mind that this is an Aluminum frame.
I don't know that I'd like to go stressing the stays and add further to the stress by loading it with my large self.
We may need to talk about those wheels you mentioned earlier....

Ugh, the set I have are 130mm. I still know where some Deore hubbed Mavic SUP rimmed wheels like mine are though.

Finally! Some more progress!!!
After many false starts and bumbles I finally got enough put together for a very short run up and down the block.
Found a new set of Alex rims with Deore XT hubs (36 hole) for $100.
7 spd SRAM cassette 12-32 (with spacer).
Honey B17 from SJS in the UK. (on sale $68 shipped)
yet more spacers to lose the extra stem that was keeping place.
Tubes and Tires
Things I've learned so far...
1)You can never have too many master links on hand (sized the chain too short)
2)When you cut cable...make sure you cut the right end (luckily I had a file on hand)
3)Just when you get everything out to start working...THAT's when everyone in the world will need you Immediately...and you get to put everything away, wash up, and grumble about never being able to finish. (But I'm not bitter!)
4)Go ahead and get new (or newer) parts...you're gonna want them after all that time spent cleaning up the old stuff and you still won't be satisfied with the results.
Yeah, I finally got tired of looking around for acceptable parts and just started shopping for new.
I'm ready to have this project done and RIDE!
Now I have to fiddle with adjustments (or take it to the LBS and say, "Save this mess I made!")
maybe get some new shiny Avid Shorties, add the fenders, find some tape to match my saddle.....(sigh)
I've stopped keeping track of the cost of this project...It's getting too close to the Sale Price of the '08 Randonee I passed up last Fall.
At least, I'll know my bike down to the last bolt....now, where did this extra spring come from?

Today I took the frame to an LBS to get a Bottom bracket, spacer and ringbolt for the cranks, crank bolts, New Front Der (shimano alivio...the Deore was the wrong size for the seat tube), cable hangers for the front and back brakes, and cable stops for the down tube.

Just keep an eye out and you never know what you will find. I got the wheelset for my winter build of ebay for 75+ shipping. Smooth as butter XT hubs laced to Salsa Delgado rims. Used but very true and in excellent shape. By the way you cannot go wrong with Deore levels parts. I went a little old school on my build with a Deore FC-M730 cranks, XT Cantilevers, Xt rear Derailure, DX Front Derailure, 8 speed Ultegra Barends. It is my do everything build based on a early 90's Specialized Crossroads frame. Frankly it kind of looks like my Mountain bike and road bike got together and had an kid
