The shorter distance thread

Okay, for those of you who have a funny look on your face at 500 miles a month (are those people INSANE)

For those of you who think 300 miles at this time of year would leave you feeling like you got run over by a truck...

Here is the thread for you 150km that's right, 93.205678836 miles.... Should be short enough for us snow bound, frozen northern types slogging away on trying to attempt to keep from going from pear shape to apple shape....

I'm in, who wants to join me?

I'm in. It's 9 degrees here now, still ice on many roads, but warming this weekend. Plus, if the winds blow favorably, I'll be picking up my LHT this weekend!

This sounds like just the challenge I need right now.

I'm in. I've ridden outside once this entire winter. I'm teaching/attending spin classes 3/4 time s week though. I don't know the mileage as our spin bikes don't have computers. It'll be good to have something to "force" me to get the bike out. Plus I see some warmer days (by that I mean above 40 or so) in the extended forecast. Hopefully it won't rain on those days.

I haven't been able to get my 'bent trike out the door since sometime in December. Hopefully, the snow and ice will be gone enough by Friday that I can get my trike out for the first ride of the year while keeping my deraillieur intact. I would like to get at least 75 miles outdoors this month. Given the way March generally is in this part of Sweden, it might be a bit unrealistic.

I'm in!! I did 4.7 miles yesterday, before it got dark out. Just a nice little ride around the block, so to speak

Edit: I guess I didn't have to get the thread going. Someone beat me to it!

I said 150km or 93.205678836 miles, only distance ridden since March 1st counts, by the way indoor distance on the trainer/rollers/bike at the gym does count. I'd never make it otherwise. If you can do it all outdoors good for you, if you need the gym distance to make it, that's okay too.

If I finish with my torn calf muscle at 93.???? by the end of the month, I think I will be happy. I was hoping for a 100 a week as a bare minimum on my rollers.

I was going about 60 miles a month 3 years ago. Saturday, I'm in a 250 mile ride. You never know; you could end up on the crazy list some day soon.

Being in Florida, this is the golden time to ride. I've lived up north, though. I respect you for getting out at all right now.

Woo *high five* I'll be doing the same over in Texas. Just remember daylight savings time might kick in during the ride and push the clocks up. I don't know if that will affect you but it might be something I have to make sure to have my brevet card signed right.

Crazy rocks

Oh, great; now I only get 26 hours?!? Enjoy your ride. See you in Paris in a couple years.

I managed to put in a -very- short ride today. Just under 2 miles. Between thunderstorms. I'm hoping for better weather this week, so I can get out more. I'm hoping for not just no rain, but possibly dry as well.

Even though I am in Florida, land of the sunshine etc., I still can't swing getting out riding during the daylight hours. I have been riding my recumbent trainer while watching the tube and have almost run out of our dvd collection. One of these days I will start tracking miles rather than movie titles. Will be joining you all in this event....

Just out of curiosity, how do you all keep track of your milage? A logbook? Google Docs?

Spreadsheet. Simple format, I keep track of miles, avg speed, max speed, route, and notes per ride. I should really use a notebook but am too lazy.

I use a spread sheet, I first developed in 2006, one sheet has all of the rides logged, then other pages feed off that information, many are based on the number of days since December 31, 2006 (a Sunday). It's very complex, but I keep adding things to it, so I can tell lots of things, based on some simple information, Date, ride length, ride time (according to the bike computer).

Right now, as of today, I am behind my goals, but ahead of last year, and I need to update spinner Saturday, later.....

Ok! I'm in for the shorter distance challenge.

Now I have to find my bike beneath a winter's worth of clothing. Hmmm. Maybe I shouldn't use my bike as a clothes hamper/storage device.

Next, clean bike. Put air in tires. Find my cycling clothes. Wash my cycling clothes. Do I have fresh batteries for my lights? Look for helmet... found my helmet!

Phew! The only thing I can't find are my cold weather cycling over pants. I'll probably find them in July, put them in a safe place, and then not find them again until the following summer.

OO! Almost forgot - recharge my little camera's batteries. Gotta take my snaps!!

Ready!

My bike lives in the garage, so it doesn't get used as a clothes holder, I am still using the trainer, 10km below target though, so I need to catch up.... Means tomorrows 6km is going to turn into 16km to bring me back on target.... This is one of the reasons I always have a short ride or two in my schedule... I also need to be better about the longer rides, last Fridays ended up being two rides done on Sunday, Saturdays disappeared all together, which is why I am now behind.....

I need to get another set of batteries for the lights, although I don't use them much, I try to do my rides while the sun is up, of course on the trainer, it doesn't matter much..... As for getting the bike ready I need to:

Replace the chain on mine, possibly the rear cassette and readjust everything.... I may just get the shop to do a tuneup on it, replace the chain and cassette (whether it needs it or not, then I know it's not going to be a problem later on).

On her bike, need to fix the saddle problem (see other thread for details), replace the chain, readjust everything.

Both are waiting on the tax refund.....

I'll take the challenge. My personal goal based on last year's April average is 50 miles per week. I'll be happy with that for March. Briskonsin high temps are now averaging at or above freezing. I had my first ride on Friday, a paltry 2 mile test run up steep hills and down through meltwater puddles.

Brr. My fenders are due tomorrow, but so is more snow. I shall do my best. Hey, I'm riding a recumbent trike, so all the snow will do is spin me around, right?

FIRST RIDE OF THE YEAR!! YAY!
I finally got my bike and gear together for a short ride around my 'hood.

5.5 km.

Big. Ride. Notsomuch.

But it was just around the local streets to figure out what work I need to do on my bike. So far I have to adjust my front brake, grease the seat post, adjust the height of my seat post, zip strip my Gorillapod to my basket for taking videos with my camera, recharge the batteries for my camera, need new sunglasses, never did find my bike pants, need at least 2 new pairs of bike shorts, take my bike into the shop to have my wheels trued and talk about new tires, maybe put on a new saddle, buy a new helmet, gather all of my tools and bike gear and put in one place - not 4.

I am also # 4486 on bikejournal.com. That's out of 4506 riders. Last year I made it to # 3767 out of 8130 riders. It's so sad it makes me chuckle.

So I am now 144.5 km away from this month's 150 km challenge.

First ride here, too. Would have gone yesterday, but Libby and I were out bike shopping (for bikes, not on bikes). I guess we went a couple of miles in the parking lot yesterday -- does that count? We had fun zooming around on 'bent trikes. I put a deposit on an inexpensive model, a TerraTrike Cruiser. Lib bought a Cannondale F9, and wanted to take it out today for a first ride.

We did a short six mile trip along the Great Allegheny Passage at Ohiopyle. Libby wants to change out her seat already, she says it's too narrow. The trail was firm, skies were cloudy and gray. We didn't hear any songbirds, no chipmunks or squirrels. Without all the leaf cover, you could see forever. Not too many people out yet, we counted perhaps a dozen. We'll probably be headed back next weekend to do the same chunk plus a bit more.

If I would have known you needed that much I would have posted that the spring bike show was coming up, it was this weekend, I think just about every cyclist in town was there. Lots of the dealers had stuff on sale. some with some really good discounts.....

I keep missing the bike show. Each season I have a flyer for it on my fridge door. Each spring and fall... I miss it!

Still, it was a pleasant ride today. Even better, the rest of this week looks like excellent riding weather. I can't wait!
