Tri folks
Why do tri bikes use 650 cc wheelsets....does it have to do with stability?

My guess is you will find 650cc on the smaller frame tri-bikes because they are trying to keep a compactness for areodynamics. But, this is only a guess based on something I think I recall reading.

650c wheels are smaller than 700c and even 650b wheels found on some Euro utility and randonneuring bikes. This has a number of advantages:
- Lower aerodynamic profile. Less surface area to present to the wind.
- Lower rotating weight. Easier to get up to sprint speed.
- Lower overall weight. Face it, even with a 50mm deep section rim a 650c wheel will be lighter than its 700c counterpart.
