Second hand deal?

Hi there,

I suppose this question could go in quite a number of places, but the people who hang out here are very helpful, so I'm hoping you can help me some more. Plus searching hasn't given me any good results.

I've just come across what looks to be a nice second hand bike, and I've organised a test ride for tomorrow to make sure of the size and comfort. However, I have absolutely no experience with purchasing a second hand bike, so I need some questions to ask and things to look for to make sure it's still good. It was advertised in an email circulated through work. Normally I ignore these but the frame looks like it might be my size so it's worth a look.

Some specs. It's actually an older LeMond steel frame (not sure of year, so I suppose that a question to ask). I've heard a lot of good things about steel and as the engine has a lot of weight to lose, I'm not concerned about the weight of the frame.

The thing that get's me is that all the other components are 2 years old, including the carbon fork. The other components are a mixture of Dura Ace and Ultegra (nice). I figure if I upgrade the frame sometime I might also keep these.

The whole thing is going for $750AUD.

What I want to check out is first make sure the frame is good, and what is indicative for wear on the steel frame. Also, because of the higher end components it may have been loved and ridden well in the last two years. So how do I look for wear and tear in these? This will probably be harder for me to tell compared with the frame but it's worth a shot.

My first question to the current owner will be how hard it's been ridden in the last 2 years, but is there anything I should be asking?

If you have also come across any good websites or guides on buying used that would be great it you could link me through as well.

Thanks in advance.

Your best bet would probably be to ask to take it to a local bike shop, and have them look it over for you.

This site looks like it will answer most of your questions:

Ask the owner how many miles are on the bike, maintenance performed, by who, how often, etc.

Sounds like a neat ride, good luck.
