Miserably cold wet but beautiful ride on the pacer (bit long)
I bought the surly pacer over the winter and fellow C&A's asked for a review of my new ride. i have reserved it for at least a decent distance ride. so what better than the plymouth to providence town ride on sunday. it was 80 miles. it rained until we were 30 minutes out of p-town. it was cold. 50's all day soaked and getting my butt kicked by a tandem the day started out with us getting lost. its 16 miles to the bridge over the canal. i think we added another 6 miles to the trip. i was the only one with fenders. it was great for my back and for those behind me but sucked following anybody. also forget about drafting. soaked already we cross over into cape cod and we hit the rail trail. there was a bike store with cafe right on the the trail. its beautiful what a nice warm cup of hot chocolate can do for a shivering drenched fat guy. from there we decided to take the hilly route. i am glad i decided to buy the smallest triple i could find at the time. its a 24-36-48 triple on the front. we (tandem and i) caught up to a group of guys on a short steep hill and these guys were suffering bad. i sat and spun while smiling to the skinny guys on doubles. one guy decided to hook on and followed us for a total of 2 more short but steep hills before he went off the back. a little while later we finished in p-town about 100 miles later and bar hopped a bit before taking the ferry back to plymouth.
leading up to this ride i have been trying to get as much mileage in on this bike as possible. i was already starting to like this bike better than my carbon fuji. it is so much more comfortable at the cost of speed and weight. i didn't buy the bike for speed. i plan on riding it for my vacation on a tour. 600 miles over 2 weeks. i hope to do all the riding in 4 of the days and enjoy the rest so this bike has to be comfortable. the rims are mavic cxp 22 laced up to shimano hubs. i have a rack with panniers so this thing is quite a bit heavier than the fuji. so for a budget build i could not be happier. i also like the thought of not being worried about scratching the bike and the bike soaks up bad roads including chip&seal very well.
