Wheel Upgrade Question

I have a Jamis Allegro 2,,, it came with Formula CXR-220 wheelset, 20mm aero profile rim,,, my understanding is that Xero makes them,,(production type thing for Jamis and Gaint,,,etc),,,,, I was thinking of up grading without breaking the bank, but I'm not an expert at all,,,,, I weigh around 250lbs, but am losing weight,, by the end of fall I hope to lose another 25lbs or so, but I'll still be a big boy and don't want to have to worry about rims going out of true,,,etc,,,,

A local bike shop told me that I should consider the Mavic Aksium and that they would handle my weight,,,

My goal is to get a better wheel set,,, not break the bank and have them hold up,,,,,,,,,

thanks
glen

The Aksium will hold up, but take into consideration that it's a lower spoke count set, so if anything goes wrong with one spoke, it will be of greater consequence.

If you want a rim that stays close to the 20mm side profile you have now, check out one of the standards of this forum; 32h Mavic Open Pro rims on Ultegra hubs. They're not really a bank breaker at $150 for the rear and $130 for the front. A quick stress and tension (since they're usually stock machine built sets at places like Performance Bike), and they're good to go. I've got almost 1000 miles on an Open Pro/Ultegra rear from Performance right now, and I weigh 250 also.

30 mm deep Alex rims are low cost and strong. If you make sure the spokes are up to tension they will carry you over all the potholes you can find without going out of true. You can save up for lighter wheels as you lose weight.

+1 on the Open Pro's. I got a set in February and have no complaints.

Let me up that recommendation a bit. I have a set of Open Pros with Ultegra hubs (32h). I trued and tensioned them up after a few rides. I put over a thousand miles on mine before a broke a spoke on the rear wheel. My fault really since I heard a ticking and I didn't tighten it up. I rail trail ride so its a bit rougher than pavement and my weight has been between 330 and 300 for those thousand miles.

So a followup question,,,, how do my wheels I currently have (Formula CXR-220 wheelset, 20mm aero profile rim) rate to the Open Pro's,,,,,, and will my 37mm tires fit on the Open Pro's as the spec does not go that wide for the rim,,,,,,,,,

thanks again

37s might be pushing it. I can't find specs on the rim width, but I'll guess it's a 19mm - 19.5mm rim like most others of its type. Inner width will be under 17mm, and you should probably stick with a tire 35mm or under. 32mm to really be safe.

It seems a wheelset you are interested in is $250. I would say keep the front wheel and put the whole $250 into a rear wheel built around a phil wood hub, due to its large diameter shaft.

$250.00 still puts you $150.00 short of buying just the Phil rear cassette hub. No spokes. No rim. No build costs. Phils start on the high side of $400.00 for the hub.

Also look into the Velocity rims. I have some Deep V's, but I weight about 40 lbs more than you. I think some of their Fusion, Aerohead or Aero would be a very strong and lite rim for you. I'm getting some new ones built up for my Trek, just have not decided which model to go with yet.

Tacomadm,

You ask about aero wheels like the aksiums then about mounting up 37 mm tires. Can we ask to better describe what your looking for and expect?

As far as the Aksiums go, when I started a search for low count wheels, they came up frequently. I ultimately ruled them out because there rim joint is not welded, merely sleeved and pinned. However, you don't weigh as much as I and they would probably hold up fine.

I like several here ride on Ultegra hubs and Open Pros, laced 36 3X with 14ga. spokes. I have thousands of miles on the current pair.

If you're going to be mounting 37 mm tires, our suggestions are going to change to rims that have a greater internal width than either of the above mentioned.
