Dirt/Road Mileage excange rate
In general terms, what is one mile of trail worth in road miles given similar topography?

IMHO there's no good answer to that... simply because there are so many more variables that can be involved in trail riding. I agree that one mile of flat off-road trail compared to one mile of flat road won't be 'equal' per se, but neither is comparing 1 mile stretches of easy flat off-road to trail to something more difficult. When you mix in 6 inch roots every 10 feet, as well as some rock gardens and a few large roll-overs, and all of a sudden that 1 mile flat off-road stretch has gotten considerably more difficult. That's just my opinion though, take it for what it's worth (not much).

just use time. An hour on the bike is an hour on the bike. Even better get a heartrate monitor and see how you're body is responding.

I can do an hour and whip myself much more severly than I can on a 50 mile cruise.
