Steepest Hill to Date

Was at my cottage on the weekend in central Ontario and did a certain hill I have been eyeing up ever since I started riding. I managed to climb it although I was pretty sure I would. Now I have to find another hill to conquor this one was 21% grade at the steepest which happened to be the last 200yards, started at 11% and just went up frm there. What's the highest grade you guys and gals have conqoured?

Not the biggest one, but the most celebrated:

I don't see many hills down here in Florida, but I am looking forward to trying some eventually.

I did a ride with a few guys whiel tring for Ride Around the Bear, about 5 years ago. I had never ridden in the area of Calimesa/ Redlands. A couple of the guys told me that OakGlen was the toughest section of this training ride. I believe it was a section of the pro race held at the tour of Redlands. Some grades at about 14% for short sections. Maybe the average is about 6 or 7 percent for 7'ish miles. So believing the guys I went all out while competing with a couple of buddies.

So after OakGlen we hit Damnation Alley. Killer climb, looks totally flat but 8 mph was my max speed as this is not flat at all. About 10 miles of HOT climbing. I went through 2 large bottles of water in 3 miles!

My buddy ended up turning back after he got sick to his stomach from the June heat. About 5 of us left, we headed up to Forest Falls. Holy........ I used most my energy on OakGlen, then Damnation Alley tore me up! A 5 mile climb up to Forest Falls was tough but the last 200 yards was 22%!

Gina drove support for us that day, thank goodness. I was on the steep section when she kept after me asking, "how do you feel? Are you ok?"..WTF!! I was on a standard double (39/25) standing trying no to fall over. I couldn't respond and she wanted an answer in 50 words or more!:p...It was the one time I felt like throwing my bike at her!...We laugh about it now!:roflmao2:

Don't believe anybody till after the ride!:D

It made me cry, then puke, then cry some more.

My hardest ride was at Azusa, we started at the end of the bike path on San Gabriel Canyon Road and road up the canyon to west fork. Finish all my water half way up and stop 2 or 3 times, it was the longest 10 mile going about 5 mph.

This is the hardest I've tried. It's basically 1/6th of a Ventoux. Around 10% avg. but with nasty sections of 20%+. I haven't gotten to the top without stopping yet, albeit I do it riding from about 20mi away with 1k climbing already.

Look familiar?..If you go across East Fork , there is a little cafe with water fountain where you can refill.

If you continue up/across EF, you can climb Little GMR which is 6 miles long. I snapped a pic of my partner and a few other guys that were up there.:D

Then up to GRR which is another 13 mile climb to Baldy Village. This is my training ground for climbing centuries. 60 miles roundtrip with 6000 ft of climbing. Ever want to go, let me know, I'll go with you!:D

My wife Gina has made the 8 mile 6% (2200 ft) climb up to the shack about 6 times from Encanto Park (near the top of the SanGabriel Trail).

Twice she made it up 16 miles from BoulderSprings (base of GMR) for about 4000 ft. (32 miles roundtrip) but hasn't made it to the village yet. It was 100 degrees the day she made it that far. I think she could have gone all the way that
day it hadn't been so hot! She was in a coma the rest of the day but she did well!:D

One of these days I will go somewhere where there are some hills...

fonfa 08-06-09 08:25 AM

And how do you find out the hill's grade?

Hill-Pumper 08-06-09 08:51 AM

The biggest hill that I have rode had a 20% grade for the last 200 or so yards. The whole hill is only one mile long, but has 500-600 feet of elevation gain. I had to stop twice to make it to the top, but I did pedal all the way. Of course the goal is make it to the top without stopping before the end of the year. :)

Feet of elevation increase divided by length in feet of distance. So 1 foot of elevation gain in 100 feet of distance is a 1% grade.

Mr. Beanz 08-06-09 09:08 AM

Lots of local roads are posted on local race club sites. Most of the time, while riding with climbers, most will have a Garmin. Many times they will post the graphs in the forums.

This road is 3 or 4 miles from our home

Mr. Beanz thanks for the invitation, ones I get the situation with my frame (it cracked) settled I'll pm you. You'll probably like on of those guys that flew by us he was probably going 12-15 mph up the hill and disappear in on of the turns, he sure made it look easy.

Mr. Beanz 08-06-09 08:09 PM

Nah! I'm an 8 or 9 mph guy!:D

6% average for 20 miles with a few 10% spots (each ~ 1 mile long).

A lot of the bike mapping sites such as mapmyride have the grade listed on the elevation profile.

Found a way, using google maps along with http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation . Right clicking on google maps gives out coordinates, which i copy and paste on gps visualizer.

Hardest hill I've climbed without stopping is a 14% one, around 3200ft long. Steepest one is around 17% but only 1500ft, so it's easier actually.

SemperFi87 08-16-09 07:25 PM

While I am just shy of the Clydesdale mark, The steepest I have hit is about 18% on Mahogany Rock rd. In NC on the Hurt, Pain, and Agony metric century. We also have a climb here called pilot mtn. It's only 3 miles long, but it averages about 11% with stretches that hit 15%. It is the worst climb I have ever ridden in North or South Carolina, but there is a really good one near Asheville that I really wanna do. It's called Skyunka mtn. road, and it terrible in a car, much less on a bike.

nkfrench 08-16-09 07:43 PM

I stopped at the bottom and looked at a 22% grade climb, "The Wall", off Underwood Rd in Aledo TX. I got a nosebleed thinking about it and turned 180 and headed back towards civilization. Several of the riders in our bike club will do it for yucks.

12% and short climb at 4mph is about all I have managed (39/27 gearing and no climbing talent).

NK what club are you in?
