i get fired up because it's personal for me. I heard my dad come home from doctors appts for YEARS with a little printout of diets and other stuff. My dad NEVER even attempted to make a change so for getting started I applaud you Peter. my dad would come home and go right back to sitting on his ass, eating bad and smoking 2 packs a day. When i was 13 I WATCHED him die of a heart attack, right in front of me, he was 46. He was 6'2" 280 and a mechanic so he had a good amount of muscle on his frame, he wasn't even close to being morbidly obese. He also had a knee replacement and his "bad knees" were his excuse for everything.

When you focus on the end result it seems incredibly hard or impossible, it's all about focusing on each day and what your going to do to get to the end goal. So many of my clients don't understand that. they think that they've hired a trainer and now it will just magically come off.

UPDATE

Let's see, I SUX so therefore I am! LOL

First, everyone has the right to read (or not read) and post whatever they chose to write here. People do not NEED to reply all the time, but they are welcome to do so if they wish. I write this for me, it helps me put my thoughts into perspective to do this. Sometimes I get thoughts or ideas that I need, sometimes I read replies that I do not like, or I disagree with. Fact is, the proof is in the pudding.

I make a comment about moving, and that it's going to eat up my free time, and my Bike is on the back burner, and people call it BS, and stuff like that... If people aren't happy, sorry, but it is what it is.

I do not live in a vacume, I am resposible for and to other people. Very true, if I die, none of it will matter, so my personal health *is* an issue, and does need to be taken care of - I do think I both know and won't forget this. But, I am the only one with an income, so I have to work, so evenings and weekends are the only time I have for anything else, *period*.

Right now, that means getting out of the house I have lived in for many years, and get my wife and I and our dogs and possessions shoe-horned into the basement and garage of my mother in-law's home. The weather is still on the cool side, yup, I did miss a couple of really nice days to ride! Wish I hadn't! All day yesterday was spent making moving trips back and forth all day - so yes, I did get a fair bit of exercise, and no, there was no time to ride.

If people wish to think I am giving up, or quiting, or whatever simply because I am bogged down (right now) dealing with a bunch of changes = they can I guess. It's sad that I get lumped into a group like that though. Think as you like, time will tell.

Subject change

I am three pills away from being completely off the morphine! One every other day, so six days total. Each step down seems to get worse - remember, I had a high of 180mg daily there before the TKR - am now at 30mg every other day - Thursday last was the first 'skip' day, and Friday was by far my worst day of this trend. Chills, sweats, and vomiting (dry heaves) - so after work came home and just called it a night and slept for 10 hours. Then yesterday was moving all day, and other than pain waking me last night, it was OK. Tonight I hope to sleep all night.

Some can understand what is going on, and some can't, but this is the one and only time in all the 30 odd years or pain meds that I couldn't simply just stop taking it, I did not like this, and am very pleased with myself for getting off of it long before the doctors demanded it of me. Assuming I suceed, I get to cancel the Pain MGNT APPT for 2 months from now and call Pain MGNT quits, hopefully for good. Everyone agreed on "Tramadol" as the pain med to take as needed, and my regular DR is fine with scripting that - so, another doctor down, and 2 pills (Avensa and MSIR) being replaced with one (cheaper pill) - that takes me from 19 pills per day (different types) down to 7 pills per day - so much better there!

I am hoping this week to get my Bike moved over to the new place, so I can start doing evening rides, but first we need to get the garage empty enough to get the cars in...UGH!

My dad was FAR from morbidly obese and died of a heart attack at 46 because he didn't take care of himself. There is one priority for you right now Peter, your health. If you don't have your health, you can't successfully hope to deal with any of those other issues that you are calling priorities.

so don't tell me your going to "try" to ride your bike. Be real with me. your either going to get up off your ass or your not going to get up off your ass, right? How does someone try to ride a bike? you either get on it and pedal, or you don't get on it and pedal.

I've read EVERY SINGLE ONE of your posts, and again, I applaud you for getting on the right path. But I'm not gonna sit here and stroke you and make this the Hallmark feelgood story of the week. When I start seeing the bs "WOE IS ME" stories like I get from my clients I'm gonna give you a boot in the ass from time to time! I see this crap with EVERY one of my seriously obese clients. they start doing well and then they want to start worrying about everyone elses life BUT their own.

Thats what this is all about. This is your opportunity to do what you need to do, for YOU! Embrace it and go get it!

The next post better be that you were on your bike for an enjoyable 30-60 minute ride and stop worrying about all the numbers and mph avg and all that other crap. it will come.

Keep up the good work.
+1... well said I thinks.

PS - are you this person?

I think I've figured out what's taking place here. Peter is exercising, but he's so used to the language of defeat that he writes it without thinking. It's a problem I struggle with myself. Someone once wrote of me that the legacy of being a fat man had its hooks in me. Peter has the same problem - like me at times, he doubts he can do this, or he's afraid he'll succeed and have a new standard to live up to. Tom S, is my analysis correct?

These folks mean well, Peter, but sometimes they don't get that the Internet is a fantastic tool for information exchange and positive peer support, but it's anonymity and lack of physical contact make it ill suited for tough love and kicks in the ass.

I know that I'm not a professional trainer to the stars, I've only had experience training Marines, so what do I know. But I'll try muddle through with you the best I can.

On the bright side (well, maybe not for you), if I think you need a kick in the ass, it's gonna leave a mark.

Moving is 100% exercise. trust me, i live in nyc in a 5th floor walkup I know about moving. Regarding exercise, I'll give you the simple equation I give everyone of my clients. 24 hours in a day 7 days in a week = 168 hours. If you want to maintain your current state, about 2 hours of exercise a week will do it. If you want to tip the scale the other way you need about 3 hours and if you really want to make a dent and get on the fast track to getting in shape then you need to be looking at 4+ hours per week of exercise. If you sleep 8 hours a day thats 56 hours. if you work 10 hours a day 6 days a week (I doubt you do, but here in nyc everyone is always telling me how they work soooo many hours) thats 60 hours. That still leaves 52 hours in the week to get your exercise in. this is why I'm a hardass on people that make excuses about not having time. It's not always easy, sometimes it takes more preparation but it can be done with practice.

As for your pain meds thats great news. I had ACL reconstruction in 2005 and I remember taking vicodin before going to my physical therapy appts and being able to work through everything they wanted me to do like a CHAMP! Then after 2 weeks you don't get pain meds anymore. The first therapy session without pain meds was BRUTAL. Everything regressed so much because of the pain. but I toughed it out and made a full recovery. I'm sure you will too.

Short note

Regardless of what is happening in my life, I do at least 2.5hrs per week on the stationary - no change there, none planned (unless more time).

Got my Bike to the new place yesterday afternoon, and got 4.2 miles in...bout an hour or so - just goofing mostly.

Moving - well, that's 2-3hrs every night after work, and Saturday was 11hrs of it - the old house is a tri-level (stairs everywhere there), and we are in the basement in the new house, so stairs (17 to be exact) there as well.

It may not be exercise per se, but my 2yr old GSD is ran by me for bout 1-2hrs every day - play, frissbee, ball work and more

In short, it may not be perfect (yet), but am not sitting on my butt either!

Last words on this...there is more to my health than simply exercise! Getting off the strong pain meds, getting off (done) the high-blood-surgar pills, and more. Point is, there is lot going on, and am getting to it as time permits.

Excellent! Keep up the good work. I too have gotten out on my bikes for only short rides, but doing a lot of yard work, cutting down trees, hauling brush, building a stone retaining wall. I've even started loosing weight and moving off my plateau. If moving those boxes is anything like moving brush and wood I bet you're loosing weight too. Got to love hauling those books when you move. Anyhow, I'm impressed, you've been doing great keep it up.

Peter, I'd be curious to hear about your nutrition. Most of this has been aobut the knee, the drugs and the bike of course, but what changes have you made regarding your nutrition? Whats working, what isn't?

Nothing like trying to ride with a cold - that sux! Regardless of whether it is correct or not, seeing the ODO go up on the stationary bike does show me I am improving. Compared to some, am sure it's nothing, but starting with 2-3 miles 17 weeks ago, to 12.8 miles today (even while feeling cruddy) pleases me.

Only one more pill to go! Tomorrow night is the last pill! All others are gone for good!

Since am blowing green - I get to see my DR tomorrow after work - yay

UPDATE

OK - let's see, first am completely off the Morphine, and am no longer in Pain MGNT any longer! Using "Tramadol" for any pain (non-narcotic, can take or not at any time, DRs love it). Am seeing pain in the outside of my lower thigh (from the bone resission) Knee DR says it takes bout a year for the bone to heal completely. Old aches and pains have arisen since nothing to hide them anymore - yay - welcome to middle age huh?

Staying on the stationary at work like a good boy, and am trying to actually ride my wonderful bike in between Mowing two properties (still moving) - it's like I need 30hrs in a day lately... will be nice when life calms down.

Last week I never left work before 8PM (I normally get off at 5PM) - just a rough week at work. Still have no computers up at the new place - so dumb - simply need to get time to set them up and install the wireless network cards.

Life is simply very busy right now, and trying hard to get everything done.

Peter

Yup, sadly, it is. Good or bad, it is what it is. I have many plans and hopes for the near future, and when all the crap from the move is over, the Bike will be my primary focus. Dumb things like the post office refusing to deliver the mail to the box in the driveway since my wife and I moved in - so a new mailbox must go up across the street (that was last night) - so no ride when i got home.

Tonight it was figuring out the type of gravel to put in the dog area this weekend (20 X 10 area with dog door into the garage - for 3 dogs = no grass in dog area = mud in the rain).

This weekend is putting up shelving in the new garage, re-arranging everything, cleaning out the shed to make room for all the stuff in my garage in the old house - fact is simple, gotta get all this done, clock is ticking. Still on the stationary every day for least 30 minutes during my lunch break (resistance now at 4 of 16, RPM steady at 90 - almost zero coasting - can talk now while pedaling)

No need to start the cycle of Bike comes first - it's simply a matter of hours I have per day - trust me, I am getting exercise every single day - may not be perfect, but compared to prior - it's a huge difference!

My bike calls me every day, but I have a list of stuff to get done - when the move is completed, when everything is in it's place, then beat me up for not riding daily rain or shine.

/shrug

Or be pissed? It simply is what it is for me.

Moving stuff IS exercise, it's just not cardio, but you're getting that on the stationary bike. I've been wanting to ride the last couple of days, but we've been having stormy weather, so I'm thankful for the exercise bike. Is your stationary bike a recumbent style or an upright? Mine is a recumbent, so I do arm curls with a set of dumbells while I ride. Good Workout there.

This is the time where you need to really nail down your nutrition. It sounds like you are keeping active and your getting that 30 minutes on the stationary. The weight should still be coming off of you. Just make sure your not getting too astray with the eating and you'll be fine.

that was the wrong thing to tell me. Soda is AWFUL. Passover just ended, if your going to drink soda, look for the Coke with the yellow caps that is Kosher for passover or drink the throwback pepsi. Both are made with sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. it's not going to help much but every little bit helps!
