Back in the Saddle

New guy at 279# today. I live in Honolulu and the slow island lifestyle and good food has been causing me to pay the price with larger and larger shorts required. It finally got thru to me that I really needed to do something different. Back in the 90's I used to ride the Ozark hills and forest trails quite a bit but I've been out of real shape for so long that any kind of trail riding is still a way in the future. I've been commuting the 5+ miles to work for the last four weeks and, with just a modicum of attention of what I put in my mouth, I've been able to drop a cool twenty pounds so far. The rides get easier by the day. Of course. there are no hills along the route I ride, but there are plenty here for later. Even at the advanced age of 63, once I found the right saddle and bike shorts, I've enjoyed the hell out of getting back in the ride.

My only problem so far is one that I'm not sure is even related to my bike. This week I've been out of action with one of the worst episodes of lower back pain I remember. I've had episodic LBP since I was a teenager regardless of my weight. It's getting much better after three days and I will probably be fine for a short ride tomorrow. We'll just have to see how it goes after that.

Great forum! Thanks for having me.

Welcome to BF.
67 y/o here.

2 bad disc's, one at L4-5.
I found that the Forward Stretch on a road bike has eliminated all of my back pain.

Oops I just saw that you are MD.

Get a MRI so that you will know exactly where the pain originates.

Nice photo.

Just had surgery at my L4-L5. I also had 2 bad disks. An MRI is what found my problem.
