Doesn't anyone ride anyomore?
 

My riding partner and I went for a ride yesterday. It was a BEAUTIFUL day for it. No wind, cool temps, sun and shade. Perfect.

Did a 77 mile loop from Ventura to Simi Valley via Moorpark and then through Camarillo/Oxnard on the way back. The whole time we only saw 6 other cyclists. I mean what up with that? Gorgeous day and only 6 other riders on a route that connects 7 cities on roads that are cycling mecca?

And this isn't unusual. We normally see only a few other riders (less than 5) when we are out. And our rides last 5-7 hours.

Where is everyone?

It's really strange to me that people avoid riding when the forecast says "breeze". I see plenty of cyclist on the trail but most start early figuring to be done before the breeze kicks up. I know riders that back out of a ride knowing the wind is up to 15mph. I myself and Gina start the same time no matter what. 40 mph winds, same time, 5 mph winds, same time. I don't let Mother Nature dictate my rides. Maybe on a rainy day cause I don't like getting my roadies grimy when I can wait one more day for a nice one.:D

I didi go mtb ridng this morning. Very few riders up on the trail.

Did 200k on Saturday and only saw 1 other rider in 9.25 hours.

Then again it was 35 degrees when I started, dropped to 31 and started snowing when I went above 500' elevation, and then was windy, raining, and mid 30s for the last 40 miles.

I haven't been on the road since August. That's a hot month so I switch to gym mode just to be in air conditioning. Now that's its cooler my plan was to start throw in a 3 hour Sunday ride with my two trainer sessions. I just haven't done it.

We got a ride in yesterday, just a city cruise of one hour. It was about +7º C (+43º F?). There were a few people out enjoying the last of the snow-free days on bikes.

I'm not seeing other riders in the very early morning, but my schedule is oposite of everyone else it seems. Of course, that I'm still spinning in the neighbor hood trying to rebuild leg strength plays a huge part in that as well.

Most racers are in their off season so seeing them out is less likely right now too.

I'm unfortunately, overwhelmed with issues in school and the forums right now, and have had time to ride exactly 3 miles in the last 10 days. :(

I'm just coming back from a month off with pneumonia and taking it easy on my 3.5 mile RT commute until the lungs come back to life. That said, I'll be doing the local Black Friday Ride.
Ten miles at an easy cruiser pace with a stop in the middle for Starbucks.
It even starts at the library where I work (so I'll be adding another 3.5 miles or so to the route).
It'll feel good to just ride with people again.

All those Californians are spoiled and soft due to the weather. Once the thermometer dips into the 60's their jackets and gloves won't keep them warm enough.

Just kidding. I grew up in Simi Valley. I absolutely love Denver as I enjoy mountain sports too, but I like cycling so much that every winter I feel a slight pang of regret thinking that perhaps I should try to make it back to Cali. Not the least of which reason is actually for In-N-Out :-)

But then I visit and see the traffic and cost of living and I look out my window at the snow capped Rocky Mountains and feel like I found my new home. Back to the OT, there are definitely less riders now than in summer but I still see a fair amount of cyclists. It depends on the route though, they mostly stick now to the well-traveled areas.

It was cool, crisp, and overcast on my 20km ride today. I don't ride when there is snow and ice on the ground. But I have the gear for cold weather riding. Today was about 7 degrees (a bit chillier down by the lake) but I was busy with work yesterday and couldn't enjoy the much nicer 12 degree sunny weather. Boo.

I'll keep riding as long as it doesn't snow. It's a combination of wimpy and significantly narrowed roads.

I was riding a lot, then about a month ago life happened and I've only ridden a few miles while tweaking a bike.

My leisurely life has disappeared.

Learning French does that to a man. :-)

Seasonal depression in my case. :-(

I used to hike on some singletrack MB trails up in Colorado. What I noticed there was that once it got to fall, and there was the least little bit of ice or snow, it seemed like everyone put their bikes up for the winter. After that, regardless of how pretty or warm it was, you wouldn't see much of anyone out. Maybe you have a similar issue there, wrong time on the calendar, so they stay in. Who knows.

And this falls under the heading of...FUN!!!

i am seeing that in nashville to. i ride 3-4 nights a week after work and get to the greenway around 4:30. since the time changed we are by our selves. granted it has been in the upper 40s and dark. there are still a few riding on the weekends but for the most part its quiet and lonely.

I sometimes miss CA weather, but also enjoy getting out and riding in less than ideal conditions. Makes me feel all manly and stuff (sometimes I need that to feel comfortable wearing all this spandex). Bet you guys never get to wear a balaclava!!! It's fun to say, and it scares dogs, small children, and minivan driving soccer moms.

Living out there for awhile can make folks take the great weather for granted I thinks.... I remember doing a sailboat race called the "Season Opener" .... I don't know when the season ever really changed though!!:p

Guess you're in the "off-season" for cycling.

Too much work and not enough time, plus getting dark way too early!

Uhh, it was on SUNDAY. If you're so inclined, go to church in the a.m. and then bike afterward. If you're not so scrupulous about "after-care," then you can bike all day.

Even crappy lights make short work of "dark."

So, where are all the cyclists? Apparently they're at home cheating on their diets because they certainly aren't out cycling.

Last week I rode down to the beach from Inland.. Day started in low 70's and was low 60's at the coast.. I had on short sleeve jersey and regular bib shorts.. By the time I hit the SA river trail I saw people bundled up in tights and jackets like we were expecting a snow storm.. Rider after rider I passed same thing tights and jackets..

I have the same problem with friends, since I ride quite a bit at night, usually 50-60 degree weather and get lots of excuses of why they can't ride.. Normally it's because it's too cold out for them.. The tights don't come on for me unless it gets down in the 40's or lower.. I use bib knickers for 50* weather.. Low 60's or higher, just bib shorts..

I actually think this is the prime time to ride in southern California. Other than the crazy Santa Ana winds we get every now and then, I welcome the slight chill with open arms.

So does managing a forum in the midst of a software upgrade. :p

Commuted Monday and Tuesday this week. Low 40's in the morning (545am) but mid 50's coming home.
Better than the morning 30's of last week. Always meet a few folks out riding while on my way home.

I rode the 17 miles to work yesterday. 37F and foggy in the morning. I saw about a dozen bikers while crossing the river to the south shore, but there were only 2 bikes in the rack at work (usually over 20 in the summer). The sun burnt off the fog by 10, and it was a beatiful blue sky for the rest of the day, but it was dark for the ride home. No wind.
