Thinking about Specialized Allez 56

So..

I am 44.. 5'11 with a 32" inseam and 210..

I ride a slightly too small for me 83 univega now, but I really want to get a more modern bike (Don't tell the C/V folks) and a new looking storage unit queen is available for a price I can afford and is local to me..

Anything I really need to look for before I get it? other than fit.. damage.. Price..

I would probably be replacing the tires with what I don't know but I do not want to have to constantly be on the side of the road repairing a puncture.. any suggestions?

I have a lust for a newish road bike but think I may prefer something a bit more tour-ish..

Im 6'0", 290lbs, and ride a 56 Roubaix (2010) -Specialized make great bikes. Close to 1000 miles and only ever had one rear puncture. I considered the 58 but the LBS insisted the 56 was better for me - worked out great.

I say go for it...great bike. My son is getting fitted for the same bike on Tuesday. He's about your size & thought the 56 felt better than 54. As far as price, everywhere around here sells msrp. I don't mind paying that because the fit is included and the guy has gone to a fitment school too.

Good luck

Agree 100% - pay the MSRP and get the "right" to take it back to the LBS for adjustments to fit etc. I also got a free annual tear down and tune-up included.

Cheaper isn't always better.

have over 7k on my 08 allez. replaced tires and saddle within the 2nd month. bike is good enough for me. not a racer or a slug. i ride it like i stole it and it takes the abuse.

also want to note that i weigh in at @260 and it has held up well to my weight.

Not a racer or a slug.. LOL. I wouldn't know what to do on a "real" racebike.. and I have already owned a couple slugs.. I Like my 83 Univega a lot, but its too small.. I have a trek 7.2 but I wanted a roadbike..

I really think I am just trying to justify getting a new toy.. Is that such a bad thing?

gotcha. looking to replace the outdated roadbike. i guess if you have entry level univega road bike and the allez is in good shape it will probably be a slightly higher than a lateral move.

Put my first 30 miles on it.. its now the owner of some minor scratches... had a slow speed run in with a group of otherwise very friendly but PITA when they are running in front of you and STOP Dogs.. got hit from behind by the largest as I slammed on the breaks to prevent hitting the front dog.. small scratch on my knee, small scratch on the dog.. small scratch on the bike..

well.. nothing is new forever..

I had a 2006 Allez triple 54cm. I loved the bike, but wasn't too loving of the drop bars/caliper breaks. I do miss her though, she was a FAST red beauty. I also had to realized I don't ride far enough on pavement (under 20 miles) for a road bike, so my current Sirrus does better for me.

Good luck, the Allez is a quick bike, for sure!

The Allez will have a place under my butt for quite some time now I suspect.. I really like it a lot.

Still thinking about it.. Even though I own it now

Now I need to lower the bike count in the house a little.. I suspect my DW would prefer I have 1.. not 5.. Three seems a logical compromise

Just got dropped off at the LBS by the DW.. I needed to replace the tube in my front tire, started leaking at the valve..

Upon exiting the car was told.. "You should look at shoes and clippless pedals, While you are in there.."

So I did.. Got some Shimano SH-R076L shoes and some PD-R540 pedals.. Ill know how they are tomorrow, lots of T-Storms today..

Awesome pics! I got my Allez about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. Very cool that you were riding on the Silver Comet Trail. I did a 60 mile ride on it about 2 or 3 months ago and the tunnel was flooded. Looks like it's drying up rather nicely.

Virtually all of my riding is on the SCT... I decided to try for 100k / 63-miles yesterday but the section just before Cedartown really kicked my butt.. Made it back to Rockmart to get some very needed food and restocked my water, got lost.. got food.. got back to the SCT and flatted my rear tire.. Just didn't want to deal with replacing the tube and the heat was getting worse by the second.. and the tired from the 50 miles I had already gone.. so I called for pickup..

I am usually at the Seaboard trail head (MM20) around 630 am if you (or any one else) care to join me for 20-50 miles on Sat or Sun...
