Making Progress, and have two goals now!
First, when I started visiting Bikeforums.net I was only doing 3-5 miles per ride. I hadn't really been on a bike for 10-15 years, and even then rarely rode more than a couple miles at a time.
Today (Tue) I did a 10.1 mile ride after work with a co-worker.
Yesterday (Mon) I road into work in a monsoon 7.33 miles.
and Saturday I did 13.1 miles in 94f and 98% humidity.
In all three recent cases I'm pretty certain I could have doubled the mileage I did pretty easily, and maybe come close to tripled it. (That's the Making Progress part!)
As for goals. My long term goal is to put 1500 miles on my bicycle this year. I didn't start until June 6th, so I'm going to have to step it up quite a bit to even come close.
My new goal is to get my 5'10" 225lb frame across the finish line of the Hilly Hundred in October. Over 2 days the Hilly Hundred is ~ 100 miles, with nearly 10,000' of climbing. It's not a race, and there are rest areas with mechanics, entertainment, and snacks.
You guys/gals are an inspiration and one of the reasons I've decided to push myself harder. Thanks!!!

Two record days in a row.
Yesterday I beat my personal best Average MPH over the length of my ride. Previously it had been 12.7mph. Yesterday on the commute home from work I averaged 13.2mph.
Today on my way home I set two personal bests!
First I got home in under 30 minutes (7.33mile ride, usually takes me ~ 34m)
Second I averaged 14.7mph on the ride!
I figure the improvement has come from two things.
First I've been riding for a month now. And more now, than at the beginning of June when I started.
and
Second I purchased a Long Haul Trucker, which the bike shop helped fit for me. The '84 Trek 520 I was riding was my dads. He and I are the same height, and roughly the same build. But I'll tell you riding the trucker doesn't leave me with the same kind of upper back / shoulder pain I was getting when riding the 520.
Thanks guys. Between you and the commuter forum you're a heck of an inspiration!
