i was wondering how these wheels are holding up on clydes

when the stock Alex R500 wheel of my Schwinn commuter went out of true and broke spokes,the mechanic at performance put on a 20 spoke aksium race-I was dimayed I didn't think it would hold up but I was wrong -no problem-I weighed 257 and the bike weighs 27-is there any difference between Aksium"race" and aksium? The Mavic sight only shows Aksium-anyway I have a brand new set that came on my new Motobecane Ti-Heat that I am not using -will find a use for them.

I have close to 1500 miles on my stock Aksium wheels that came with my 2010 Roubaix. I weighed 315lbs when I started and I am now down to 290lbs - not a single spoke broken in all that mileage. Also, only ever had one puncture in all that mileage. I keep my tire pressure at the max (8.5 BAR) - not sure if that helps.

I'm about 195 lbs and have the Aksium Race set on my bike. I'm not a fan.

My personal experience is that they are very soft. I'm currently running my rear brakes much further open than I would like to avoid rub when standing or sprinting. I'm currently waiting on a set of wheels being built by my LBS.

Some people have mentioned getting the spoke tension checked (which I have not done) but my spokes 'sing' the same song when I pluck them and they seem nice and tight. (I don't want to spend the money to get the tension checked when I know I'm getting new ones soon).

I wouldn't recommend them, but maybe I just got a bad set.

me!! i have a pair of aksiums 270lbs and no problems so far. have done about 500 miles on them, same tyres and all and keep them well pumped. don't know the psi or anything but just rock hard ha ha

Two pairs + over 5000 miles on them = no complaints...

I put them in the truing stand once a month or so, but they usually need only minimal tweaking, if any. I have one set of the 24/20 spoke and one of the 20/20 spoke.

Started riding them at about 270#. Now around 245# (but I'm working on that)...

I got the 24/20 set from a friend who complained about them flexing (he's riding a Ti bike - Lynskey made but sold through Performance). Turned out it was his frame flexing. On my Tarmac there is no noticeable flex, and I'm heaver than him.

Two sets here, commuter and road bike. No issue with either set, and I've ridden them at my heaviest weight of 340 lbs. and am now at 305 lbs. and still going strong. I probably have about 1,000 miles per set so far.

crap.. not what I wanted to hear. I'm on a Lynskey Cooper... I wonder now if it's the bike and not the wheels... How can I tell? (I can flex the bike if I try.. lean to one side and push on the other etc... but you can do that with wheels too)...

The new aksiums are 20 spoke while 2 years back they were 24 spoke wheels..

The Aksiums I have are the 2009 design with the slightly higher spoke count. I like them. They're pretty quick for me. I've got over 2,000 miles on them and I run at 120 psi on the Michelin Pro3s (which max at 109, so I've been over-inflating them). They've been true for the entire distance and I have no issue with rubbing, even when hammering out of the saddle. I'm around 255 pounds of pure soft fun.

Off-topic but how do you like the Heat? I'm planning on buying that bike next year. What's your height, weight, and what size frame did you get...if you don't mind me asking?

I must say I don't see what the attraction is...at 1795 they're not lightweight and with the straight pull spokes will your LBS be able to repair them if you do bust a spoke? And if you do break a spoke will the 20 spoke wheel be true enough to ride home on? for less money you could get handbuilt wheels with Mavic rims, Shimano hubs, and 32 spokes, repairable anywhere: https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...d&productId=72

The way we determined it was by trial and error. Put them on my bike after his. We did the ultra-scientific "grab the frame and try to flex it" test. His flexed more than mine did. We also ended up trying a friend's Zipp 808 wheel on the back of his bike, which is about as stiff as wheels come. It still rubbed some.

Like the Heat-really not so different from my Moto Century Team but a lot less buzz since its Ti not aluminum-last bike was too quick handeling for me,this seems right.

I had 2000 trouble free miles on my set. I now have close to 3000 miles and have broken 3 spokes, the first two in the same ride, and the third a week after getting the first two fixed. Since the last spoke broke, they retensioned the entire wheel and so far it has been fine.

Mine have lasted two seasons--I have 20-spoke on the rear and I weigh 230--until I lost two spokes in two weeks. This second time it has been at the LBS for a week and counting. "Waiting on parts". Shops in Ireland and UK seem to have them in stock--must be a hassle in the US.

I ride Mavik Aksiums on two of my bikes and have been using them for the last five years.Dispite several direct hits on nasty pothole they have stayed true.I weigh between 90-95 kg depending on diet,training ect...My best bike has Mavic Kysium elites and they have gone out of true however.

I have 2010 Mavic Ksyrium Elite on mine and they're 18 & 22 spoke wheels. I was very concerned when I got them on my bike initially but they've been perfect since day 1 requiring zero maintenance.

Given my weight has ranged from 250-280 on them I'd say they're pretty strong. Sorry they're not Mavic Aksium but since they're less spokes I figured it was worth sharing.

I have the Moto Ti Heat - love it. It came with the Aksium Race wheelset which I only got 2000 miles out of before I gave up on them. I couldn't keep the rear true no matter what I tried and eventually broke a spoke. The front never had a problem and I still have it as a backup. I ended up getting a pair of Velocity Deep V 32f/36r handbuilt for me last July and only have needed minor truing a couple times. Over 4000 miles on them and very happy. Going to build up another set myself this summer to have ready for when this set needs rebuilding.
