I expected worse. I had slacked a bit on riding last week. I need a decent saddle bad as the one on the bike is causing some issues. And I am broke and unemployed. Sometimes I can tough it out and sometimes I won't.

CraigB 08-03-10 06:58 AM

Keep fighting the good fight, guys.

Week 6: 211.0

Feeling awesome, and today is my long ride and a double header in corporate softball. I'm hoping next week i'll be around 200. Fingers crossed!

I'm still obese, and will still be obese for the BMI until im 185 pounds. 154 pounds and I'm normal weight. I'm thinking of getting those body fat pinching calipers because I was told in high school it would be impossible for me to get to 160 pounds do to my bone mass. So according to the BMI, I will be forever overweight!

CraigB 08-04-10 08:48 AM

That's the thing about BMI. It doesn't take build into account. They try to allow for it by giving ridiculously large ranges - for me, they say "normal" is from 129 to 174. And I suppose if anyone could arrive at an "ideal" weight for me, it would be within that range, though I think near the top. I'm shooting for 165. I know if I were 129, everyone, my doctor included, would think I was on my death bed or that I'd just been released from Buchenwald.

I guess the system works as well as any other system that's designed to include everyone in the world. ;)

BMI is often used beyond it's intent, and that is what gets people into trouble, it's a statisticians tool, so for example if you compute the BMI for every resident of the planet, and compute an average based on country, you can tell which country contains the largest number of obese people, according to this site it has the initials U.S.A. what is interesting is that Canada, which you would think would not be far behind is ranked #11. must be the weather, because Mexico is in 2nd place. Although the data is from 2002/2003, so the ranks may have changed since then.

Insurance companies compare you to their coverage area average, if your at the average you pay the lowest rates, much higher or lower and you pay more, if you do belong to an outlier group (for example unusually high bone density or very large muscle mass) then they can establish company rules to determine a more accurate rate, providing the person fights them on it. Depending on the companies business though, it may be as simple as asking for a better rate, due to medical exceptions, it may also require doctors reports though, which could cost more then the difference you get in the rate.

I don't know you personally, but a lot of people think they would look like an end stage AIDS or cancer patient if they were at the lower end of their normal BMI, but it's because we have become so acclimatized to there being so many obese people around, and since obesity usually runs in families -- I think it's generally a learned response, this is why you see the fat kids with the fat parents, guess where they learned about food, yeah, exactly.
