Awesome, thanks for the update.

bautieri 08-11-10 11:59 AM

Cool!

Go Neil!

dbikingman 08-11-10 01:40 PM

Thanks for the update and the link. I'm not sure what is more impressive Neil making it to the top or the fact Tom has a mountain named after him.

Both.

Waiting for a pickup in Emlenton at the end of the Allegheny River Trail. JAGraham is driving down from Franklin while I wait in this nice cofeehouse. We rode the 32 mile trail in two days, camping at a site just south of the 3400' foot long Kennerdell Tunnel.

4.5 miles, 1000 feet of climbing, and all long grass. Not a single Doug siting, fortunately.

The mountain was named before he lost all that weight! :thumb:

Late to the party, consider the "like button" pressed a whole bunch of times.

I love these threads about neils adventures. Some day we'll ride together my friend.

Peter_C 08-16-10 03:18 PM

Heard from Neil today. Sounded in fine spirits, only got rained on once (so far) and got to play with the mud for a while...

thestoutdog 08-17-10 10:34 AM

I just talked to Neil and he's about to enter a long tunnel. Tomorrow I am heading out to Pymatuning State Park on the Ohio/ Pennsylvania border in the afternoon. Anyone and everyone is invited to join us for a ride around the lake (he says its three miles or so). Shoot me a pm if you want to go with me. I am driving my Durrango and have two open rails on the roof top carrier. I will probably be leaving Stow around nine in the morning. Come one, come all!

And flat miles as well. The route goes round the lake until it meets the causeway, where we cross.

Peter_C 08-17-10 02:45 PM

I'd love to come, if for no other reason than to bug you guys~! But my PT is tomorrow so I won't be able to make it. Have fun all...

thestoutdog 08-17-10 02:49 PM

Oh heck, skip PT and come anyways! J/J

He also SUMMITED Mount Davis as well. I took 30 minutes to reach the top, and two hours to get down, thanks to trails longer than the stated distance on the map and the overgrown conditions. We had to bushwack a short stretch.

I really need to plan a riding vacation for the Spring.

I have decided in my ultimate, and possibly lack of, wisdom to not have microfrature surgery on the knee next month and try and get this thing back in shape on my own. I have a renewed caloric intake strategy and a good friend at work who is along for the ride. I have a nice vintage Schwinn World Sport sitting behind me to deliver to him either tomorrow or Saturday, and viola, a riding buddy for in the mornings after work.

Be warned Neil, Texas just may end up in PA in the Spring.

OK, we'll look forward to it. Which part of PA, the Philadelphia area or "Westsylvania?" The latter is the hill-loving, Philly-hating region of the state - in other words, most of it.

I saw one more covered bridge (Lower Humbert, outside Confluence), and hiked in Ohiopyle State Park. God must have planned the latter as a water playground. Aside from 79 miles of hiking trails, some MTB singletrack, the 300 mile Great Allegheny Passage, the 70 mile Laurel Highlands hiking trail, and the whitewater, there are natural water slides on Meadow Run. I slid down twice, although I had to push myself along because of the low water level. The sandstone leaves grit on your shorts and back, but also is slick as glass - I slipped once when entering, and had to crab-crawl to get out. I have bruises on both legs and my left hip from the sliding. Still, it was fun, and needed since I hadn't bathed in three days prior.

Someone sent me a cell phone video of my time in the water slide, but it seems none of my friends can get the forwarded message. I'd hoped someone had posted it, because I look darn silly. :-)

Spent the night on Mount Davis alone, JAGraham having gone home for the night to rest. I'm in Meyersdale. I'll finish up in town in a couple of hours and drive to Cumberland, MD. The plan is to ride to Oldtown this afternoon, get picked up, leave the car in Cumberland, and spend one more night on PA's tallest peak. Saturday and Sunday I'll ride from Ohiopyle to Cumberland, overnighting in Rockwood at the campground, and drive home from the Queen City.

View from the overlook. Unlike most of the overlooks in the Pine Creek Gorge, you aren't looking at the far wall. In the distance is the village of Ansonia and Rt. 6.
