I start the new year at 281.6. That's down about 2.5 pounds since last week. I was correct in thinking that the weight gain was from too much bad 'holiday' food, and nothing to be concerned about.

I'm currently restricted in my activities as my knees heal. I walked about four miles during the week, and that's it. I've had to cancel my plans, including a hike up Mount Misery in Valley Forge and a 45 mile ride on my birthday Saturday the 8th. And I'm trying to focus on the present, but between the injury and the fact this is the five year anniversary of my life change I find myself lost in memories. For instance, today is the day I went to the gym for the first time, five years ago. I was 400 pounds and was exhausted by seven minutes on a recumbent exercise bike. Now, five years later, I can't ride. :-(

Still, there are some ups this week. I'm doing a short hike on my birthday at St. Peters, a town next to a glacial moraine field, and then a lunch with friends. I have a bag of clothes that are too big for me that I'm giving to Goodwill. I'm taking some time off from planning my May trip across the country, which will give me a break. And I'm turning 45. Five years ago I feared I'd never make it.

Oh, and I'm lowering my goal weight to 225. This is consistent with my rethinking myself as an athlete who went soft instead of a super-obese man who tried to lose weight and failed.

Since it's a new year, I won't clutter my post with all my weekly results from last year. Let's just say at my fattest a few years ago I was 304.5. I got started losing seriously last April at 264.5, and my last weigh-in of 2010 was December 18 at 210.

01/01 - 210.5

4 holiday parties, a week away from home and gym, eating most meals out (including a couple of incredible buffets), and only a half-pound net gain. I'm ecstatic.

Got back to the gym on Sunday for another C25K routine and an hour of weight training. Tonight I'm back to spin class. More running and lifting on Wednesday and Friday, and another spin class sandwiched in between on Thursday. With any luck at all, the next WW meeting on the 8th will show me with a loss since our last meeting before the holidays.

I'm feeling pretty good about the new year. Now if I could just get a different job!

11-29: 243.8
12-6: 246.4
12-13: 248.4
12-20: 241
12-27: 248.6
1-3: 241.6

Anybody sensing a pattern here? The pattern breaks next week. Funny thing is I'm up 1.6 pounds from Sunday - I think I took in more sodium than usual yesterday so I'm retaining water from that.

Count me in!

The highlights:
September 2008, lifetime high: 255 lbs
2/8/2010, approx one month after gastric banding: 221.8
1/4/2011: 194.8

When I had the surgery last year, I had thought that my goal would be to get under 200 lbs. Now that I've done that, 175 sounds good....

I'm trying to get back on the wagon, it is that time of year

Starting weight(1/20/09): 442.2lbs
1/3/11: 263.2

So a few goals for this year, I want to ride a metric, Run at least a 5k and do a sprint triathlon. I also want to get down to my personal goal weight of 220 lbs. Needless to say I need to get to training.

This loss is just from changing my eating habits, haven't started exercising yet. *Also I weighed on a different scale, so there could be a discrepancy. Will know next week when using the same scale.

12/28 - 327 *Dr's office scales.
01/04 - 325.7

Goal for next week: 324

1/1/2011 279.4

I've run 3 full marathons and 2 50K's in there. Not sure how many 5K, 10K, 20K, and half marathons.

Running got me off to a good start, now I hope the bike takes me the rest of the way!

I'm hoping to drop below 200 pounds before 1/1/2012

Count me in (I'm not on the list above). Weight this morning was 327, up from a low of 300 last August at the peak of riding season.

Short term goal is to be below 300 by mid-March before my first big ride (Skinny Tire Festival in Moab), 275 by the MS150 at end of June.
