I'm dyin' here!

I finally got back out on the bike today for the first time in over a week. The weather has been BEAUTIFUL, but a sinus infection advanced to bronchitis, which has now progressed to a case of walking pneumonia. So I rode 2 miles very slowly today to get to the doctor's office again, since I was without car.

Getting on the bike and riding felt great, it felt really good while I was riding, which made me want to keep going. But as soon as I stopped, the coughing kicked in pretty bad.

What sucks most is I registered, paid the fee and was really excited about going out for the Solvang Century tomorrow. My first organized century, I was all set for the metric, and now I can't. Sucks so much.

But I'll be back there soon, somebody ride some for me and enjoy it in the mean time.

Finally got to some clipless pedals! It really does make a big difference!

Also hit my 10 mile goal today!! I went from 2.5miles last Sunday to 9.5 today and I felt great after! Next goal is 20 miles next weekend. It's been an awesome week getting to know the bike but tomorrow is my day off and I plan to fully utilize that by parking my butt on the couch!! lol

So today was a definite reminder that going uphill into a strong headwind SUCKS. The wind was also a reminder of the downside of my coveted upright riding position. But, still enjoyed my ride. Wanted to be at 4 miles by Monday, did 4.275 today - I am pleased with myself :). Onward and upward!

My ride today was fantastic.
50.3 miles today with perfect weather
Mileage this month 163
Mileage this yr. 1467
Over/under riding days this yr. vs last yr. +1
Over/under miles this year vs last year +144
32.6 miles average per ride this yr.
5532 miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000

Very good weather all day today 51* when I left and 73* when I got back. Met two friends at the San Sebastian Trail Head with the intentions of doing about 35 miles finished up with 50.3 turned out to be a very good ride. I haven't ridden since Thursday a week ago so the legs are a little tired. I am still ahead of last year by about 144 miles but I will loose most of that over the next few days. I still have a shot at my goal of 700 miles this month but I will need some cooperation from the weatherman.

It's a beautiful Spring day here and just got back from my weekend solo out-and-back loop in the foothills around the house. The loop is 28 miles and 1,800 feet of climbing. Takes me about two hour and 20 minutes to complete.

Was great to see lots of cyclists out today enjoying a ride today.

Aahzz 03-13-11 01:11 PM

Excellent ride today. A bit chilly at 40 degrees, but sunny and clear. My goal had been to get to 4 miles by Monday, which I beat yesterday, so I pushed it and made 5.085 according to ye olde cyclocomputer. I am pleased. Upped my average speed from 8.3 to 9.5 as well. I love progress...

I still love my Cypress DX as well. Of course, I stopped by the LBS yesterday to browse new helmets, and now they have the Cannondale Adventure 3 in stock, which I'd wanted to check out. My salesman reminded me that I have a 30 day exchange policy, so I may have to ride it for the heck of it to see if I like it better, though I doubt I will 'cause it has grip shifters and I loves my triggers.

Great weather great ride... Temp mid 60s to mid 70s. Tons of cyclist out today, ran into some friends that I had not seen in weeks.

24 miles in some very muddy conditions along the Schuylkill River Trail.

john423 03-13-11 05:30 PM

24 miles? Heck yeah, Neil, that's awesome.

I managed 41 miles, somehow, and my knees feel like Tonya Harding's thugs have been taking batons to them. Trying to train for a metric century on April 16, and just wanna put up a respectable finish. Spent some of the ride riding with a friend of mine from work, which was fun - rides are better all the way around with other people - and was joined by a biking vet for a while, so I got to soak up the knowledge there.

I had exactly the same image, except Sayre was Tonya Harding. :-(

Sayre and his brother Tyler are riding a century. They had 62 miles in as of 4:00 PM. Sunset is 7:30 or so, and they still had 38 uphill miles to Reading in those 3.5 hours. I'm starting to get worried, especially for Tyler who was very beat up looking at the 60 mile mark, when I last saw them. Sayre's on the trike, BTW.

For my first ride on Friday I did probably 1/2 a mile, yesterday I did a little over a mile, and today I just got back from doing 4 miles.

Thanks to Mr. Beanz on the advice about letting your legs get warmed up in my other thread, it definitely helped.
If it wasn't getting dark I would have rode even longer. :D

bbeck 03-13-11 06:47 PM

i rode 10 miles @ shelby bottoms in Nashville while waiting on maw-n-law to arrive @ the airport. first of the year.

Another day in the basement! It all adds up in the end!

Yesterday - 33 miles in pouring rain. Soaked my Brooks saddle and so letting it dry out before putting weight on it again. Pulled down the MTB to use for a coupla days....

Saturday Solvang (CA) century on the tandem. It was beautiful and ugly at the same time. Half of the 5000' of climbing was in the last 25 miles or so. By mile 70 I was feeling some twinges in my legs, the onset of cramps. Two short 11% climbs did me in so we walked a bit, but we were able to finish the ride. The scenery was spectacular, horse farms, vineyards and the occasional cow. I think we would do this ride again provided we can get stronger faster than we're getting older.

50 mile group ride on Saturday. This was my first ride after my professional bike fitting and new saddle. I felt great after the ride. We averaged right at 17mph. Not too bad for being my longest of the year thus far.

On Sunday, the wife and I decided to just ride our bikes. No racing, no competitiveness. We just wanted to enjoy being outdoors so we did a 15 mile ride on the golf carts paths here in Peachtree City. We stopped at the park and watched the sailboats race across the lake. It was a perfect day.

Sunday 03/13/11....Finally hooked up with Herb & Alyce for a ride. We had been planning the ride for a few weeks now, but the rain and a few other obstacles, it finally happened. Herb & Alyce invited us to start from there house in Orange, so that was cool. We hit the road and made our way through town, over to Mountain to Sea trail (?). I'm not real sure of the names, I was just happy to follow and not get lost ha ha! Through Irvine then around Back Bay.

On the trail we ran across Drew who we hadn't seen for quite some time. As we were getting read to pose for a pic, another rider Simon from the Nimrods stopped and asked if he could help us out by taking a pic of us all. Cool! So he chatted for a brief moment and it was obvious he's quite the character. Pretty funny entertaining guy!

So after a few hills, some trails we hit PCH and headed towards HB. Stopped at a Mc'D's for a cheeseburger and some story telling. Well my stories, Herb & Alyce pretty much just listened and laughed ha ha! Then we stopped at the usual beach stop for short break. The rest of the ride was a tailwind return and off into the sunset.

I was pretty shocked with Alyce. She mentioned that we would do a touring pace. As mentioned in the video, I was expecting to go much slower but she's pretty strong. They had done a ride through Santiago Canyon on Saturday but even a little fatigued, she rode very well. I'm not even sure exactly where we were but there were a few hills that got the heart pumping. Nice 47 mile course, nice ride.

Bummer part of the day. The night before the ride, my truck started acting up. Maybe a dying battery. But we couldn't miss the ride again so I figured if it dies, hopefully herb had some cables for a jump. He did so off we went and now, looking for a new battery. Bummer, I could have bought new tires for the bikes he he he!

Beanz, looks like a great ride. I always enjoy you're videos as well, thanks for posting!

I'm a little jealous you guys have people to ride with all the time, I'm pretty much a loner out here in Oklahoma. I've got a friend that rides and we'll hook up every now and then but not all that often.

A really lovely day in the North East, UK today. Very clear skies at about 7C.
Just had time to do a 20mile route then went to work at 1pm :(

Hopefully I will be out some more times this week bfore I start work.

Aahzz 03-14-11 02:59 PM

Feeling my legs a lot today, giving them the day off.

bikingtolive 03-15-11 09:41 AM

The ole training plan called for 11 miles today at avg pace. That translated to 14.9 mph. The temp was 50F at 5 AM here in North Florida so it wasn't too bad. Better still, there was no wind.

Today was also the first ride with the new wheels (Mavic CXP22s) and chain. They worked out great.

Today's ride put me over 500 miles for the year which is 25% towards my goal of 2000.

CliftonGK1 03-15-11 09:58 AM

My ride was soggy, and a little slower than usual. Last night I did a couple sets of spiral-down sprints (2min/1.5min/1m/0.5m each for sprint/rest period, for a total of 10min/set) and I was kinda tired this morning. At least the temperature is going up and the wind was mostly dead.

TrekDen 03-15-11 10:15 AM

Did another session on the indoor trainer. Watched the final stage of Tirreno–Adriatico race (broadcast live in Italian). Turned the volume down, and put on some music instead. The good news is, temps are predicted to be in the 60's Thursday. Outside here I come!!!
