What's In a Name? Is "Clydesdale" a put-off?
If you took the time to answer my survey posted last month...THANK YOU! If you haven't checked it out, the link is below. We plan to close it at the end of the month.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PGPVQN8
My partner and I are moving forward with a clothing line of performance wear for bigger folks. We are sparring over the name. He likes "Clydesdale Performance Wear". I'm not convinced it's a good idea. What are your thoughts? Do you embrace your Clydesdale label, or do you find it annoying or a put-off?

I don't like the billboard of being a Clyde. I'm a cyclist

I begrudgingly admit that I *may* be a clyde at 200 pounds. I don't want to be reminded of it.
Clydesdale spelled out in a name would be off-puting to me. Maybe a hint or an homage like a horseshoe in the logo would be a subtle queue to the right audience.
Like how Subaru advertised to lesbians in the 1990's. The target demographic recognized it on a subconscious level, everyone else couldn't be bothered to notice....What moves the subconscious of your target demographic?

Considering that the basis of the nature is a triathlon class, I consider clyde a positive statement. At the same time I don't think I would label a a clothing line with that name as 1) Many people do not know the meaning and the history 2) a certain number will be offended by the name
my 2 cents

I think that adopting the Clydesdale monniker could be a bad marketing decision. Our market is actually a small one, just look at how much is available out there compared to "standard". I think adopting it could hamper your business as if the designs are good, everyone will buy them and wear them

It doesn't bother me, I am a large fella but I like to use the term cyclist better. I think in a marketing world its a bad idea though. will turn people off.
Call me what you want, label me what you want but I am a cyclist.

Let's not forget the other portion of this forum "Athena". I prefer not to be referred to as a Clydesdale myself. I do like the term Athena tho. We did do forum jersey's a few years ago and they had Clydesdale and Athena on the front. With Horseshoe and stylized A on sleeve. Fat Lad at the Back's women's division is Fat Lass at the Back.
I have no advice for you but if you make QUALITY cycling gear for those who are larger than the supposed "norm"....word will get around and you will be successful. Fat Lad at the Back is an example. They don't mince words with their company name but they make quality gear. I also think they designed something they put on their gear that is not obvious...but folks who KNOW....know the brand when they see it.

As a Clyde, I've never been put off with that label. I first was called that in my 30s, at about 225 and almost 6'3". In my 50s, and due to weight and gravity and injuries, I'm just a tad over 6'1", but was 378 at my heaviest. Now back in the 240s, I'm quite comfortable in the yoke of the Clyde...

I never had heard the term until I ran across this forum, and it doesn't really have a positive or negative association for me.

There are worse
True story.
I lost some weight, and go visit the Doc.
Dr: " you have lost weight and are no longer considered obese"
Me: "So now I'm just a fat f____r !?"
Dr: (after stopping laughing) "well, i'd phrase it differently"
Moral: There are worse thing to be called than Clyde

In another 8-10 months you won't be obese, but still will be labeled fat! My doctor is awesome and brutally honest, she has been an amazing doctor over the years. She is just straight with me, I like that. Still makes me laugh
