Salsa Casseroll, Salsa Vaya, Jamis Bosanova

These are the three bikes I am considering to buy. My problem is finding them, in my size, to test ride. Thus maybe I can get some advice here.
6'2"...243lbs and in my 60's.
Salsa Casseroll....considered a light touring bike of steel that can take up to 700x38 tires. My fear with this bike is I will overload it . I have read where riders 60 lbs lighter than me have found the bike a bit flexybut great riding. So with my added weight, I'm thinking it would be noodle like. Add a few groceries and the condition gets worse. This would probably be my first choice if it wasn't for the above consideration.
Salsa Vaya....this bike is touring/gravel/road bike, heavier than the Casseroll, with SRAM Apex drive train, disc brakes, and ability to handle 700x43 tires. Has a more upright riding position that will be nice for my older body...I'm favoring comfort over speed now days. Could handle my weight and some stuff but wouldn't have the alive ride of the Casseroll, I suppose.
Jamis Bosanova.....interesting bike this one. Steel that has a cylocross rear end and a touring/commuting front end. Disc brakes, carbon fiber fork...also with an upright riding postion relative to the average road bike. Jamis builds these bikes with different size tubing for different size bikers to create a similar ride throughout the size spectrum...maybe an advantage to us large riders.
About 90% of my riding will be on paved roads and the other 10% on well maintained gravel. I won't be doing any full loaded touring but may carry some groceries or credit card touring loads. Most of my time will be spent on rural roads with a little small town riding. It is real hilly where I live and would appreciate a bike that is climbing friendly.
I would much appreciate any information on the bikes I am considering. It is a fun process figuring out what bike I would like to buy, but somewhat frustrating in actually finding samples to test ride.

I just ordered a Salsa Vaya. It arrives on Monday. I'll let you know what I think of it. It's main use will be commuter/rain bike. I will have panniers on it, so I'll load it up one day to test it out.

Test ride them all and see which one you like.

I know the Vaya is getting some buzz on the Commuting forum. The Bosanova looks interesting and Jamis usually gives you a lot of bike for not a lot of money. However if you are planning to go touring longer chain stays help with heel clearance.

Judging by the bikes you are looking along the lines of light duty touring bikes (as compared to cyclocross with tend to be a lot more sportier). Check out the Jamis Aurora and Bianchi Volpe. Also, the Surly Cross Check (even though a cyclocross) might fit the bill as it doesn't seem to be race oriented.

Yes, the Vaya is a very intriguing bike. The owner of the bike shop I visit thinks the Vaya would be more ideal for me than the Casseroll but he is pro disc brakes and tends to the mountain bike side of life.

In my seach for a new bike, one thing that has become clear is that Jamis, does indeed, give you alot of bike for the money whether it be a Bosanova, Aurora, Coda, Quest, or Enduro. The fact that they produce some really nice steel bikes, has me on their side.
The Surly Cross Check, Bianchi Volpe, Jamis Aurora, Soma ES, and Gunnar Sport were all bikes on my list beforfe I pared it down to the three I mentioned.
It is only recently that I started to consider my size as an important factor in selecting a bike. There are guys my height who would be riding the same size bike as I but are 60lbs lighter. If they loaded up the bike for touring, it would be the same as me riding it without any load. And, of course, even if I don't plan to tour with it, there will be times I will want to haul some stuff.

Don't be concerned with your size and the Casseroll. I'm 6'1" and have been between 225 and 245 since I got mine in 2008.





I've ridden a few centuries, both supported and solo. For the solo centuries I carry a ton of stuff, including a First Aid kit, sun screen, pliers and wrenches in addition to a multi-tool, kitchen sink...

I'm also an occasional commuter. For that duty I have panniers that are routinely loaded with all of the above plus my work clothes, shoes, Rocket Shower, etc.

I love the Casseroll, and I really like the new one with the built in front rack.

Thank you, Zoste, for the informative feedback. I have been able to locate a Casseroll and a Vaya in close to my size that I can get a ride on in a week or so. Which size are you riding?
I noticed for 2011 the Casseroll has made a few changes.....front rack, new fork, flatter top tube, longer head tube and canti brakes. Hope the new design maintains the same riding characteristics that had so many people raving about the Casseroll in the past. I believe I have only read one negative comment about the Casseroll on this forum and that fellow was disappointed it wasn't as fast as he thought it should be. My speed days are long gone. I'm looking for a versatile bike with a comfortable ride that can take fenders and rack and take some 700x32 tires and haul some light loads. A bike that is a pleasure to ride for me will get my money.

The LBS where I purchased mine recommended a 57, but I would have been OK with a 59. I think that the changes which Salsa made changed the sizing, too. I see that now they size them in even increments - 58, 60.

Gunnar Fast Lane sounds like what you are looking for.

But... I'd have them make the chainstays a little longer, about 10mm.
It'll lessen the chance of your feet hitting panniers, and lengthening the wheelbase
improves the ride.

If you don't like disc brakes, you can have them add cantis.

Best part is that you will send them your measurements, and they'll
tell you what size.

You could even have them take the downtube from their touring bike
and use that. It would add a bit of beef to compensate for your size and loads.

Interesting that you brought up the Gunnar Fast Lane.
I was in a small restaurant last week and met a very knowledgeable bike guy. He mentioned the bike he was interested in for himself and one he thought would suit me was the Fast Lane. Although it is over my budget, I did a little research on the Fast Lane and was quite impressed with what I read. My trip to Seattle to try out the Salsa bikes is also where the Gunnars are sold. I may inquire a little further about the Fast Lane.
Concerning chainstay length, what would be a minimum length for me to clear panniers? Both the Salsa Casseroll and the Jamis Bosanova have 425mm chainstay length, while the Vaya has 450mm.

There is no minimum chainstay length. My LHT has a chainstay length of 460 which is more than adequate. However I wear a size 11 shoe. Basically if you have big feet, than a longer chainstay length would be beneficial.

Got delivered yesterday, put it together last night and made the maiden commuter voyage this morning.



So far, so good. For reference, I am 6'2", I got the 57. No meaningful feedback yet, other than the initial fun of having a new bike. I did have a lot of weight in the packs today, no problems with handling or braking.

I bought one of the new Salsa Casserolls in early April. I am using it mainly for commuting, so I have it equipped with a large seatbag, fenders and 28 mm tires. I have owned at least 10 road bikes, and the Casseroll is the most comfortable riding. My weight is currently about 180, so that probably doesn't qualify as a Clydesdale, but I don't believe the Casseroll would ride like a noodle with someone your size. The ability to use larger tires is a real plus if you're a Clyde, and the Casseroll will handle tires up to 38 mm with fenders.

Got to say, I really like the looks of that orange Vaya with the black trim. You got it loaded up real nice and if I was hauling more "stuff", it would probably be my bike of choice.
I'm leaning harder than ever in the direction of the Casseroll, but won't know for sure until I get mounted up on one. The ability to put 38's with fenders almost seals the deal for me. Where I live, you are either going up hill or down hill and the Cass has the edge for me over the Vaya and Bosanova.

So far so good. Just what I was looking for. I'll try to post up more pics and details next week. 117 miles on it this week so far. It's fun to hit the little dirt shortcuts here and there, and the gravely rough sections are now handled with ease.

I have a new Casseroll and the first generation Salsa Fargo. Salsa makes great bikes, luv'em both. I like the Vaya, but I need a triple cause my old legs like to spin up steep hills. I have about 200 miles on the Casseroll so far and the ride and handling are just great.

That is some front bag you have on the front of that Cassie. What kind is it? Are large bags like that in the front primarily for easy access while riding and/or are they advantageous for load distribution also?

I'm in a similar situation and am leaning towards the Salsa Fargo. It seems like a great all around bike and I LOVE the look and geometry of the bike. The biggest concern I'm having is it's not a triple crank. This scares me for many reasons. First, I live in an area with TONS of hills and I ride them quite often. WIll I be spinning out coming down them? Second, I have plans of doing some week - 2 week long tours and want to have it loaded. Will I be able to climb those hills on a Fargo loaded up?

I would plan on changing out the tires to more of a touring tire instead of the meatier tire that's on it. The LBS talked about swapping the crank to something with more teeth (?)

Any of you guys with more knowledge have any idea about this.

Can one no longer purchase just the frame for the Vaya? the Casseroll?

I purchased a 2010 Vaya in Jan. Amazing gift from the Universe as they "sold out" in my size (50 - the other end of the spectrum!) in August and I'm one of those weird people who really likes metallic brown (2010 color). A custom built Vaya "arrived" at a local enough bike shop, to me, as a customer had to return it due to injury/illness. The custom build was nearly exactly what I would have chosen - MTB gearing with double crank.

My point, and I do have one, is that many bike companies (last year Surly, Salsa, Soma to name a few), sold the frame only in some models, so that one could custom the ride to their needs.

Salsa still sells the frame only in order to customize your build. Furthermore, (at least for Salsa and Surly), the frames/full builds are available through the QBP Catalogue, and can be ordered by pretty much any LBS....no need to find an "authorized dealer".
