2011 Blood, Sweat and Gears is in the books!

The BSG took place this weekend on a beautiful but windy day in the mountains of western NC. Theer were two ride options, a century (102 miles 13,000+ ft climbing) and a half century (52 miles, 7,000 ft climbing) I successfully completed the half century in 3hrs 41 mins, good for 178 out of 500. I rode with 4 other friends and we all managed to finish Many riders were not as fortunate, we saw a number get off and give up with one guy actually picking up his bike and throwing it in a ditch!!

The winner of the century did it in 5:02 and the half winner in 2:38. There were 750 riders in the century. It was a great experience, the organisation was terrific, the rest stops were well planned and stocked with lots of food and drink and all the many volunteers were cheerful, helpful and pleased to see us. It was a very hilly ride with 2 category 3 (borderline cat 2) hills, 1 cat 4 and 5 cat 5 hills.

I thought the start might be problematic but it actually went very smoothly, they started the century riders first then the half. All the riders were fun and very pleasant and cheered each other on, especially going up the hills. Along with the climbs there were some hair raising descents. With so many riders, I was braking hard and often but still managed to hit 44 mph several times which was fun

I've only been cycling for 9 months and this was my first big organized ride, I'd do it again without hesitation. In fact my goal for next year will be to do the century ride.

Buoyed by this success, I've entered The Grizzly in two weeks. This is another mountain ride of 65 miles that is part of the Grandfather Mountain Highland games and features a cat 1 climb of 3.71 miles at an avg grade of 8.4%, yikes!!

From the wording in your previous post on this ride, I thought you were doing the entire ride.

Thanks Craig, just I was a bit nervous. All those riders and a very tough hilly course. The descents were quite technical, full of s-bends and hairpins, like an alpine pass, thrilling and frightening at the same time.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add "great job"! I once did a metric with 7000 and it felt just as tough as the century with 12000. As a newb, you're off to a GREAT start and won't have any probs with the full next year!
