If you are interested in RAAM get the DVD, Bicycle Dreams. It is about an hour and forty five minutes long and documents the 2005 RAAM. Very good viewing.

The prevalent theory for RAAM racers isn't mega mileage, it's more quality over quantity. You build your speed up so that when you race you can ride at a higher sustained speed over a longer distance without getting anywhere near your red zone. If your goal is to do it some day, this year is better than next because next year you'll be a year older!

I've ordered up a Tanico X, and can't wait to try it out. I'll post my experiences as soon as I have some miles on it.

I've done it 4 times. I ride about the same annual miles as you, 6-10k/year. I've never done an official 24hr race though. I did ride 386miles (600kms) in 22hrs once though so I'm about the same speed as you when I'm in shape. I've done the the Furnace Creek 508 eight times though.

I did it in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. I'd like to do it again (I'm sure I will just not sure when). The hardest thing about doing RAAM is getting to the starting line! There is so much to do to do it right and it is expensive!

HomeyBa I was the team mechanic for Team Coastguard in the late 90's and you are right. I remember the rules meeting, all of the time spent the bikes and vehicles compliant and then the inspections before the race. Was definately an interesting time and I'm glad I had the opportunity to participate in RAAM even if only in a support role.

I have read some old posts where folks have mentioned issues with discomfort due to the slot or with the sides flaring. Has anyone had issues with this, or is this unique to some?
I am wondering if any concerns are fixed with proper set up/adjustment?

My guess is that most early problems with the saddle take place in the first couple of weeks. In my case the leather began to stretch, requiring adjustment at the nose which would bring it back into shape, then it would stretch again. I became concerned and went back and forth with the factory folks about this. I used up about 1/4 of the available adjustment before the saddle assumed its present excellent tension and shape, and haven't had to touch it since. Properly tensioned, it's hard to imagine the saddle flaring. As for the slot, if you ride naked I suppose you could get something caught in the slot. But if so, don't try to sell me any of your used saddles!

If money's an issue, Oilsooner, go to the "brown leather sale" part of their store page. You can order a Titanico X there in brown (with either color rivets) for $99! I just ordered mine yesterday and will report back on my experiences with it in the next few weeks.

Got mine yesterday. I've put about 30 miles on it and while it needs a little adjusting, it's by far the most comfortable saddle I've used. I'm going to go on a 40-50 mile ride this weekend so I'll be better able to report how it does on a longer ride. My other saddles (Specialized BG Avatar and Alias 155) were very good up to 30 miles or so. This one is better so far.
I stuck it on my MTB for the last couple days.

Nice looking saddle. I like the way that they put the X on the back. My test saddle did not have that.

Has anybody seen or heard of these? I like the connection of the sides underneath. I laced my Anatomica to stop the splay.

I am selling my beta testing Selle Anatomica Titanico X saddle in the honey color. It has maybe 500 miles and looks brand new. I am selling it because the color didn't match my bike and I have a red one now that looks better with my set up. I don't need two so I thought I'd let the other one go. I have all the original paperwork that came with the saddle. The difference between this saddle and the ones you buy is that this one doesn't have the "X" embossed on the back of the saddle and my name is written on the bottom of the saddle. This was done by the folks at Selle Anatomica. Send me a message if you're interested.
