That's fine and all, but when I'm looking to catch up with my friends, I'm really not interested in visiting X number of sites, where X is more than 1. It's dreadful to have to go to a site for people who have less than 140 letters to say, and a completely different site for people who may or may not have more or less than 140 letters to say. As such, I gravitate to the place where both pithy and substantive things can be posted at the same time, and not the place that arbitrarily limits myself to browsing only my friends terse comments on life. It's even worse when said friends decide to post their comments in both places at once, realising that they have incongruous friend lists and absolutely must make sure that everyone everywhere reads what they say, thus wasting my time having to read it twice.
Also, seriously? Complaining about 140 characters now equates to not being able to write magnum opera? A little hyperbolic, you think?
PS: Now. If this post were to be posted on Twitter, you would get a statement with the expressiveness of the statement "I don't like twitter because it doesn't let me type enough to say what I want". Bland, boring, mundane. Now compare to this post. Ah, colorful language. Truly one of the spices of life.

fB is another matter. It too can be useful but personally I have deleted my account because it takes toO much effort to frustrate Zuckerberg's business model and keep oneself clear of the banality.

^^this. Most of the people criticising twitter here clearly have no idea how to use it. You don't have to tweet the minutiae of your lives, nor do you have to follow those who do. It can be used to ensure you have access to information that you need, or that particularly interests you, when you need it.

I agree, most people that tweet are dumb and make poor use of the medium. But that isn't the fault of the medium, it's that most people are dumb. It is perfectly possible to use twitter intelligently, and without having to wade through the inanities of the air-headed. Just follow the info sources that are of value to you. The 140 character limit is no constraint, because mostly they are just pointing you to items of interest elsewhere.

I've read that the internet is something like 80 % porn by weight. ( By the # of bytes transferred, really. )
On the merits of twitter: I've always thought it would be a good logging platform for software applications. Logging to the hard disc means you need to write code to trim the logs so the disc doesn't fill up a few years down the line. To a database has pros and cons. Twitter is free, and it's fire-and-forget.

If that wasn't unethical, it would be incredibly useful and convenient.

No Neil, he doesn't. He lives (somewhat) close to me and we used to talk from time to time. Although he never mentioned anyone here giving him trouble, it certainly wouldn't be unheard of. When he decided to "start" riding he was unemployed. He has gotten a job, possibly even the second one, since then driving trucks.
