Ride Recap: A touch of Wilmington

The ride today hit home personally for me. I am originally from Washington State and when I was 18 years old (or somewhere around that time) it was time for me to go to College and I attended The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY which was 3000 miles away from home. Anyway, for my externship, I went to Hotel DuPont in Wilmington, DE and today’s ride was a blast from the past.

We met up in Wilmington at 9 am. I was there first, and then Jim pulling in and Terri as well. Two new people that I haven’t ridden with…. Jim B and Fred came too. We chatted as usual, catching up with people and me awing over Jim B’s handle bars on his bike. Loved them….and we were right next to Brandywine Bike Shop and Whohaha Coffee Shop (sp?) (I was really early this morning getting there and had a nice cup of hot chocolate and window shopped at the bike shop…. So much stuff!).

We saddled up and rode. After about a half mile in, I noticed an issue with my bike. The front tire was ribbing against the brake pad. I didn’t make a fuss about it but when we did stop, I checked it out. Seemed like it was out of true. I tried adjusting the brake pads but it didn’t work so looked like a visit to the shop after the ride. I think it was due to the bumpy Baltimore ride we did the other weekend. Not sure though.

Anyway, we rode through some scenic area and then we were in down town Wilmington. This brought back memories. We stopped at the DuPont Country Club which I have never seen but the building looks so nice. Then we went by my old work…. The Hotel DuPont. I remember walking to work every day and walking home late at night. I remembered all the chefs I worked with and everything I was taught in those 6 months. It was great to see it and the park too next to the hotel. I used to catch the bus there and go to Christiana Mall for a cheap movie or two.

Jim took us through some cool stuff like the DuPont Children’s Hospital and we learned that no child has to pay to get treated which was neat. He also took us by where the DuPont’s lived which also happens to be where they are buried now and now it is a museum. There estate is called Nemours, named after an area in France. Around the estate was a tall stone wall and on top of the wall were large shards of glass to keep people out. When Mrs. DuPont died, she has in her will that she would be buried on the estate next to the house so Mr. A.I. DuPont could watch her and she could watch him.
We strolled in and out of the harbor looking for a ship that was due to dock today but we didn’t see it until Jim heard the bells which sounded like the bridges being brought up and sure enough, he was right. Two draw bridges were going up and a ship was passing. I don’t know much about the ship but I can tell you (and you can see from the pictures) it is an amazing ship.

On the way back, it was time to hit some climbing (since we enjoyed the down hills on the way there). Only one hill was a killer for me. You can see in the picture that I am hunched over, trying to catch my breath and pondering the thought of rolling down to the children’s hospital as I thought my heart was going to beat out of my body. A quick stop and we were off again. Met up with two more riders for a quick BS session and then hot dog time at a local shop. Deliciousness!

When we got back, Terri and I headed over to a bagel shop. I was hungry plus it gave Terri and I some time to talk. Jim, Fred, and Jim B couldn’t be persuaded to stay. Peer pressure didn’t work.

Terri and I said our goodbyes and parted ways. Time to hit the bike shop.

Ended up being two things…1) the front wheel was out of true and the guy fixed it for me and taught me how to do it. I think it was due to all the bumps from some past rides but it surprised me because I thought the back one would go out of true first. I was wrong. 2) the caliper on the break line was sticking.

Problem solved…. For the price of free. Its amazing what can happen when you bring the shop people cookies and food…. No wait and free service. I love it!

Good day indeed. I can relate, left Washington at 19 and miss it terribly.

I love ride reports! Thanks Chef. And a CIA alumnus too!

I met up with some guys on a ride a few days ago. They regularly ride around here, but they are roadies and too fast for me. I'd love some riding partners. Allen, I hope you get hooked up with some people to ride with, it really does help motivation.

Hmm. Doesn't look like the Wilmington I rode through in 2009. I rode through the downtown, Rodney Square, and up to the PA border on my two week tour.

Thanks for a great ride. Looking forward to the next excursion.

As for the handlebars, they have a couple names, Trekking and butterfly. Nashbar sells them under the mountain bike category:

I can't remember where I got mine, I think I used amazon.com to search for them.

I definitely want to come, not 100% sure about the 30th, though. Would love to join you for the NJ ride.

where are you riding in DE this weekend? I might be game (but am still what I consider to be a n00b to doing anything outside of the flat park by my house)

Neil - they went out towards the Brandywine River and hit the DuPont area up off of Rt 141 and 52...Greenville/Montchanin area and Northern end of downtown Wilmington and down to the riverfront area - there is a nice path along the river there that isn't too crowded - you missed the Hotel DuPont by a couple of city blocks on your Rodney Sq. route

I went through the downtown - I passed the church next to the HSBC Building, and took that road (Pennsylvania Avenue?) north.

You were close...just depends on if you stayed right or left when the road forked on PA Ave - left would take you to Greenville and DuPont area right would take you through Trolley Sq and I don't know where it ends up north of there.

I remeber the Hotel DuPont. I was a motorcycle referee for the Tout Dupont (1993-1995). They always had a pre-race Hospitality Party there. Good food and gorgeous presentation. Ah the good old days.

Met John E. DuPont a couple of times. He sponsored the Junior Nationals at Trexlertown Velodrome. Used to come up in his helicopter and land next to the track.

Chefisaac where are you working these days. I don't remember seeing. Someday I'll make a ride.

I fell a couple of weeks ago and hurt my back and ribs. Haven't been doing any exercise since then. I'm ready to start again though. Falling isn't as much fun at 64!!

Bill

bill: funny you mention falling and the fact it is not fun. I bunny hopped the other day and it hurt like hell. When I was younger I did it all the time. Green asked me to come out and mtn bike someday but to be honest, I think it is going to hurt like hell.

Check your pms.

I don't recall if I took the right or left fork. I think I took the right. I stopped at Winterthur for my pickup - I was running late and so rather than have my friend wait for me at the border I asked him to start south.
