I've started having wheel problems on my Trek 1.2 and I'm the market for a new bike. I consider getting some new wheels so I can continue to ride my current bike and swap them to a new bike when I get it later this year, or in the spring. I feel I will need stronger wheels since I'm 6'5" and weigh 275.

My bike shop recommended a couple configurations and prices and I wanted to hear some feedback from my fellow clydes.

I'm curious as to the problems you are having with your current wheel set...

Popping spokes? Wheels out of true? Did you buy the bike new - of so, how long ago? Have you tried to have the wheels re-trued? Did you try to replace the spokes?

You can get Deep V rims from Jenson online for $57

Ultegra hub $100 Jenson out of stock unless black

front hub $70

total of $284

Buy online then take to shop for a build, labor and spokes should be about $160......save $100!

Youu can go less expensive with 105 level

Hub is only $75 at Jesnon. They work great and just as good as Ultegra. Save more with a 105 front hub as well.

Out of curiosity, why use a 36 Ultegra hub on a 32 Deep V rim???

Thanks for the comments.

I've broke one spoke and had the guys at the LBS rebuild it. I had to take it back in after that because the wheel was out of true. He said it appears the wheel's strength is becoming an issue and I may need to replace it. The bike still less than a year old. I bought it in June of this year. Would you think this should be covered under warranty from Trek?

I bought my Deep V from Jenson ($59) picked it up cause I live close. Spokes for $20. I built it for $84 tax included.

If I had gone the shop way, having the hub, I would have paid $80 for the rim (the LBS wanted shipping special order and tax $105 ) then $105 for spokes and labor.

$210 for the build and I did it for $84. Even if I had paid $60 for a build, $145 is better than $210. That's the savings on one wheel.

I've had up to 10 bikes, now with 7, nice to support LBS but cost on maintenance is my priority along with keeping them in good riding condition.

IMO and IME, warranty issues are a hassle. You get the same wheel, same problems down the road. I had Bontager Select and Race on my Treks. Squeezed 2000 miles out of them then went to the Deep V for peace of mind.

If you do go with the warranty route, be sure to take them back to the shop for re tensioning of the spokes, this helps them last longer. Spokes break due to lack of tension allowing them to move around like bending a hanger wire over and over, it eventually gives. Proper tension holds them in place )sans damaging movement).

I myself pretty much blame many broken spokes on new bikes on the shop. They don't tell you this and they don't do a thing about it unless you speak up. Some just flat out don't know. They true the wheel and say it's good since it looks straight, there is more to it than that. There is a reason I learned to build and maintain my own. Shops aren't allowed to touch my wheels.

Reading your other thread, you have 1500 miles and a broken spoke. IME, I figure things go wheel wrong after 2000, so close.

Did the shop ever "re tension" your wheel during a free tune up?...My point exactly.

I bet if anything, they trued the wheel.

price seems a little high for what you are getting.. After parts, that would put labor over $200.00, that is way too high.. I personally feel the DT swiss are one of the best rims on the market, I have used the RR1.1 and 1.2 with great success. The 2 rims they specd for you are very different. the dt swiss rims is a little wider and will support wider tires if that is what you are looking for.. The Deep V is just a great all round rim and will support up to 700x28 tire size with no issues while the dt swiss should be able to handle up too 700x32 sized tires..

But then again (from another post), the owner of this bike is 392 down from 424 and says those wheels are doing fine!!!

I went into another local shop yesterday (Wooden Wheels, Newark DE) to ask about the cost to build wheels - $38 plus the cost of spokes ($0.10 - $0.15 depending on the color) and the cost of the brass nipples. So it would be approx $47 for a 36 spoke wheel to build if I provided the rim and the hub. I found Niagara Cycle works has the DT Swiss TK540 for ~$75 + free shipping on Amazon. You can find the Ultegra hubs online as well and the set should cost you about $170 or so.
For your 1st option, my LBS (with me buying the rims and hubs) would come out to be about $420 for the set...

Time to find a different LBS with more reasonable wheel building rates

I've picked up 28 spokes and 28 nipples from a buddy for $20.00 and that is a deal.

Spoke and nipple set for 71 cents each buddy price

OK - then the guy I spoke to must have been sorely mistaken...I'll have to talk to the older guy in the shop and see what the real deal is. They were in the process of moving out of a strip mall and into a more customized shop in the center of the university town and this was the last day before they moved all the floor inventory...so I can understand if the thought process wasn't clear.
